Nah, he started wearing the caps when he was first campaigning in outdoor settings and had to keep his combover from falling off. Now it’s a signature thing.
And now the “signature” is “Fuck you dead troops.”
Very rude to wear the cap. I might’ve looked passed it if it were black.
But, oh no. As usual the great Orange has to form his own narrative.
That Fox showing old footage shows they know it’s wrong. And guess what Fox? We see you lying.
Outside?! Hell, he wears it in the situation/war room, at the desk in the oval office. It’s becoming a fixture, an aberrant behavior.
It’s like a toddler who has to wear his Halloween costume everywhere.
FOX has “fixed” their coverage of the dignified transfer. Instead of using old footage of him not wearing his stupid baseball cap; they skip Trump and his toadie entourage altogether.
They still show AF One in the background so you know he’s there against his will to be playing golf.
I can remember back to ancient times when taking off one’s hat was the traditional gesture of respect to the dead.
Soon all of us who remember those days will be dead… and no hats will come off for us then.
I wear a cowboy hat whenever I go outside. I used to always wear a hat in the 70s, but quit when I went to work for an engineering company. But I started wearing one again about eight or nine years go after sunburning both eyes rather badly on two occasions. The baseball cap I usually work wasn’t doing much to protect my eyes.
Since then, the dermatologist told me to keep wearing it to help protect my ears and neck from potential skin cancers.
I take my hat off in houses and often when I arrived at my destination in buildings.
However, if I’m sitting at the drugstore lunch counter (we still have one), if there are people sitting to the side and I can’t set my hat down on a stool, I wear it. Also, if I’m sitting at a table with all seats taken.
I always take it off at the door when going to church. Or at a graveside funeral service.
In a store, I just leave it on.
That reminds me. I have to go to a big city on Tuesday to see a vascular surgeon. If everything goes well, I will likely stop at a western store there to buy a new hat for every day wear in the winter and to have my current hat cleaned to use for special occasions. Or buy a new hat for special occasions (maybe a Stetson Open Road) and continue wearing my current hat for everyday use.
Yes I remember those times as well.
I also a remember a poem from my youth that starts with something like:
Hats off! The flag is passing by!
An American flag lapel pin is like a talisman against all of the hat stuff.
I’m actually OK with him having worn that hat. You can see less of him that way.
What pissed me off was not just the cap but that he saluted. He was never in the military, even if he is (gag) the commander in chief. His presence was a disgrace. Vance too.
I’d be okay with him wearing it everywhere, if he wore it in a way that obstructed his breathing enough.
“A hat should be taken off when you greet a lady and left off for the rest of your life. Nothing looks more stupid than a hat.”
–PJ O’Rourke
On Trump? Couldn’t agree more. But in his case, the hat is really only having that effect at the absolute margins.
Asking as someone from a different culture - is the hat thing really that important? I’m really surprised by the responses here. It’s just a hat; something to keep the sun off your head. What’s the big deal?
In general it is considered disrespectful for men to be wearing a hat on solemn occasions. Baring your head is seen as a sign of respect, and deliberately not baring it is therefore seen as disrespectful. There are different (and very specific) rules for military uniforms, and different cultural norms for women (whose hats traditionally are pinned on and therefore not really removable under the circumstances).
In the grand scheme of things it’s a trivial point, particularly given the whole shitshow it’s in the context of. However, it is exactly the sort of trivial thing the right would lose - and has lost - their shit over for weeks and months about were the individuals involved members of a different political party. So it’s both a sign of disrespect and a reminder of the right’s blatant hypocrisy.
The bigger issue, of course, is that there are dead people in the first place.
I would be hypocritical if I took issue with this “hat thing”; I have always thought these rules around when or where it is “respectful” to wear a hat are stupid.
You don’t have to take issue with the “hat thing”, while still taking the lying fucks to task for their hypocrisy. They literally used old footage to avoid showing their cult members a video of the cult leader disrespecting the troops.
Agreed; Fox News can go fuck a cactus.
Except that we all know that conservatives don’t care about hypocrisy - they love accusing liberals of it, but it means nothing to them personally. Call a conservative a hypocrite and they’ll just shrug.
