This is probably more reflective of carelessness or stupidity in reporting as opposed to actual lying.
There’s a Fox website piece today on the government “banning sliced bread” during WWII. Or “rationing” it - they can’t seem to decide. It starts with the bumbling opening paragraph.
Wow, never knew things got tight enough that bread disappeared from grocery store shelves. Except it didn’t.
Checking their source and other cites, it appears that there was a short-lived ban on selling bread that was pre-sliced - something to do with bakeries allegedly saving money by not using expensive slicing machines and conserving raw materials used in making waxed paper to wrap the slices. Anyway, enough Americans protested having to hand-slice their own loaves, that the ban was rescinded less than two months later.
Lots of people on the home front made do with less during WWII, but that particular sacrifice seems rather low on the list.
