This Might Be Fun: A Morality Poll on PBS Ranked Top 10 Sins-Do Your Own Rank

I’m sorry, but I’ll have to politely decline. My wife wouldn’t want me doing any od those things.

What?

Hmmm, I have done every one of those things at some time.

I don’t see any of them as “sinful”, but I think cheating sucks. Everything else is perfectly okay with me.

Presently, I still curse, enjoy sexual thoughts and a little porn, and gamble like a mad woman. Although I no longer drink, take drugs, kiss other women or have abortions, I still think they are okay. I lived with (and had sex with) my husband before marriage.

Gee, should I feel like a bad person? Nah…

From most to least:

Extra-marital sex (high)
Having an abortion (moderate, depending on circumstances)
Illegal drug use (depending on the drug; pot-low, heroin-mod/high)
Getting drunk (low)
Gambling (low)
Cursing (very low)
Co-habitation (none)
Enjoying sexual thoughts (none)
Enjoying porn (none)
Premarital sex (none)
Homosexual sex (none)

The problem is that there are circumstances and conditions that could change my feelings about most of these for an individual case. In general my personal “sin ranking” is:

  1. Violence
  2. Deception
  3. Irresponsibility
  4. Rudeness

Reading the reference, press release, they refer to “Biblical principles”, but while the survey includes non-prescription drugs (is there any drug ban in the Bible?), it does not include murder (“Thou shalt not kill”).

They are tracking from the same survey as prior years, but the selection of morality is puzzling. Sex sex sex, no question about murder, theft, or “as ye do to the least of these, so ye do unto Me”.

I ain’t gonna rank’em, mostly they aren’t all that immoral, and my sloth is turned on.

Good grief! What is wrong with these younger generations!!??!

I’m sixty years old and you are all sticks in the mud!

There is no single thing on that list that is automatically immoral. I guess that almost any of them could be if that became the entire focus of your life, but then so could anything done to excess. Maybe there are one or two things that should never be done without good reason. Don’t any of you believe that whether or not something is immoral can depend on the situation?

To me immorality is about a lack of compassion.

Good flick, wasn’t it?

I think I’ll put them into groups as well.

Acceptable

Enjoying sexual thoughts (as long as you keep them to yourself unless queried)

Homosexual sex (in a commited relationship)

Cursing (but not in front of impressionable children or others either easily shocked)

** I don’t particularly like it, but I guess as long as they’re not hurting anyone…**

Getting drunk (but being a drunk, particularly one who drives, on the other hand…)

Co-habitation

Enjoying porn

Illegal drug use

Gambling

Premarital sex

** Things actually morally wrong**

Extramarital sex

Having an abortion

  1. Enjoying sexual thoughts
  2. Gambling
  3. Homosexual sex (in a commited relationship)
  4. Getting drunk
  5. Cursing
  6. Cohabitation
  7. Enjoying porn (depends on the type)
  8. Extramerital sex
  9. Having an abortion
  10. Illegal drug abuse

Nothing on that list, save extra-marital sex (without SO’s consent), is inherently immoral. Eh, maybe abortion, but I tend to stay away from that particular topic. I’ll leave abortion off my “list.”

I agree. However, I think cheating on your wife/husband (or bf/gf) constitutes a lack of compassion.

I’ll give it a go, most acceptable to least acceptable

  1. Enjoying sexual thoughts
  2. Cursing
  3. Getting drunk
  4. Co-habitation (sans marriage)
  5. Homosexual sex
  6. Enjoying porn
  7. Gambling
  8. Pre-marital sex
  9. Having an abortion (have it early, none of this 6-7th month stuff)
  10. Illegal drug use (depends, I think pot in moderation is ok)
  11. Extra-marital sex (not cool to cheat on someone)
