My house is white or chestnut. My body looks like the sun in white clouds. In my natural state my body is smooth and soft. I can become an animal. What am I?
I think the answer is an egg. Eggsshells (the “house”) are often white or brown. Inside is white and yolk (“sun in white clouds”). The contents of the shell (referred to as “my body” in both the second and third sentences) are sort of liquid which I guess some would call “smooth and soft”. A bird, reptile or monotreme (look it up) can be hatched from an egg (I’m ignoring soft-egg-layers like fish or amphibians, since the riddle talks about shelled eggs).
No, that is not a hard riddle.
A hard riddle is “Why is a raven like a writing desk?”
Excellent answer, Saltire. I believe you nailed it.

Because there is a “b” in both, and an “n” in neither.
The riddle Why is a raven like a writing desk? has been tackled by Cecil His Own Self.
Re: The raven and the writing desk. I think that any answer that fits the criteria of the riddle is acceptable. If the writer is looking for a specific answer and the riddle can be answered by more than one response, then it’s a poorly designed riddle. Of course, Carroll said that he didn’t have an answer in mind; therefore I wouldn’t say it’s a poorly designed riddle. Just a “throw-away” bit of absurdity that people had to have an answer to.
FTR, “Because Poe wrote on both” is my favourite answer.
The question has been answered, so I’ll close this thread.
