For some reason cats and used bookstores seem to go together so I used to see this a lot. It’s been over five years since I’ve been to a used bookstore so I’m not sure if this is still true.

Home improvement stores and garden centers, too. Every store I’ve worked in has a feral cat or two hanging out in the garden area. Because every store I’ve worked in has birdseed and grass seed, thus mice and rats, thus cats. The cats are tolerated because of the rats, and also because who doesn’t love a kitteh?

“Ferry” doings generally – an interesting situation which still obtains in England’s most easterly counties of Norfolk and Suffolk (by general repute, not a part of the country significantly on the cutting edge of progress). About fifteen “beeline” miles east of the city of Norwich (Norfolk’s “county town”, generally reckoned the region’s chief city) is the fair-sized town of Great Yarmouth, on the North Sea coast. The river Yare runs between the two, meeting the sea at Great Yarmouth; but winding around some way to the south, taking about twenty miles between the two communities. There’s a road bridge across the Yare some three miles east of Norwich; several others within Great Yarmouth; but none in between – and in between, only one modest and small-time, on minor roads, ferry for motor vehicles across the river – located about two-thirds of the way from Norwich to Great Yarmouth.

This situation causes considerable inconvenience to local residents, and visitors; but “thus it is”-- and seemingly, remedying it is not an urgent thing on anyone’s agenda. (Which I rather like – of course, I don’t have to live in those parts.)

Ferries are not unimportant in eastern North Carolina, either. You can get onto the Outer Banks on a causeway from the mainland, via Roanoke Island; but if you’re coming from the south, it’s a lot easier to take the ferry from Cedar Island or Swan Quarter. And if you want to get to Ocracoke Island or Cape Lookout, you’re going to get on a ferryboat; neither island has bridge access.

Mrs. SMV and I vacation in the Outer Banks; and even though we still have two more hours until we get to our rental, driving onto the ferry is when the “travel” part of the trip is over and the “vacation” part begins.

Recycle Books in the San Jose area still have kitties last time I went there, both locations. In fact I gave them a rescued cat.
