This. Word.

Lol

I never really understood why people respond with vacuous one word or acronym responses.

The worst I have recently seen was IOKIYAR

I Only Kiss If You Are Royal?

Darn it! I’m too late to say that.

So I’ll just ad that Word is non-religious cool-speak for Amen.

It’s not quite a Hallelujah, though.

Crimeny…I knew you were high-class, but them’s some strict standards!

You can google it if you want, but why bother*?

*I googled it

I’m ok with all of them except:

“fail” in response to a really long, well thought out post. Never happens here but quite popular on other boards.

and,

“This”. Growing very popular here. Just grates on me for some reason, even though word, +1, me too, etc don’t really bother me.

Yeah yeah, someone will want to quote this post and write “this”. Haha, you so funny.

Plus symbol followed by single-value digit as a means of communicating congruence of opinion.

You’re not the only one. I felt very let down by its meaning. I vote for a new meaning! So far we’re got “I Only Kiss If You Are Royal”
nd_n8 that was a thing of beauty. applauds

It’s turtles all the way down?

Actually “word” short for “word is bond” is religious speak of a sort. From here

“Many terms that originated as Five-Percenter jargon have been adopted into the hip hop slang as well. For example, the term “G” in hip hop originally was short for the Five-Percenter greeting of “God”, which, through its spread to the West Coast and the rise of gangsta rap, it eventually evolved into “gangsta”, a stretch from its origin. Other popular terms such as “word is bond”, while having significantly older roots than the Five Percenters, were believed to have gained prominence through its use of the term, referring back to the Nation of Islam and the NGE’s shared 120 Degrees.”

Yep

It’s just that someone up above said “the moderators will close this any minute”

They gotta prove us wrong sometimes

Ah, my apologies. I didn’t bother googling it because I thought it was something someone made up for a one time use, not a real internet acronym. You know, like IDBTGICIL (I Didn’t Bother to Google It 'Cause I’m Lazy).

Interesting. I had no idea of the history of the word and feel richer for knowing. Am I in the minority in not knowing, or would you suspect that a lot of people have picked up the term without knowing the background?

Postin’ “me too,” like some brain-dead AOLer.

Depends on your demographic I suppose. I haven’t the first idea how much the average rap fan knows about the 5% Nation, but their words and ideas crop up in rap lyrics quite often and to me that’s a form of prosthelization. Well, those words and phrases popped up all the time back in my day, I can’t speak for the mindless garbage that passes as mainstream rap these days. I knew about the Nation, and about Zulu Chapters but I had to Google to figure out what “Superman that ho” meant, word is bond.

I seriously doubt this. The word is bond part might be true (I thought it was just short for the old saying “my word is my bond,” but I don’t know where that came from, so I don’t know), but the G thing is highly suspect to me. Look at the cite in the Wikipedia article. It seems self-promoting to me. Not saying it’s wrong but I wouldn’t accept this as fact without further research.
