All summer, my daughter and I have been watching repeats of The Gilmore Girls. Today was the episode where Luke, who was always skeptical of his sister Liz’s boyfriends, tells T.J. that he decided that he (T.J.) was all right. T.J. felt Luke was being condescending and told him he was a dick.
Lorelai came in and said to Luke “I just came in on the tail end of this conversation and I wanted to ask: you didn’t change your name to Richard, did you?”
This was the perfect line from Lorelai. However ABC family censored T.J.'s line and changed it to “Thanks”. Therefore what Lorelai said made no sense at all.
Hey, hearing the original line could have transformed your daughter in to a convenience store-robbing lesbian crackhead just like that. I hear it happens almost instantly when kids hear words like “dick” and “stub” and “uvula”.
I don’t mind so much when they just blank it out, especially at 5:30 in the afternoon, but putting in words that weren’t there really bugs me. Ever see the Broadcast TV version Glengarry Glen Ross?
Ever since 9/11, the Disney organization as a whole including ABC Family has edited any footage of characters accidentially knocking buildings down during fight scenes on Power Rangers. It’s been years since I’ve watched the show, but it’s been five years- haven’t we all moved on?
In his book DisneyWar, James Stewart commented that when Disney bought the Family Channel from Fox, they wanted to position it as a new network for the coveted 18-49 demographic. They were going to rename it “XYZ” (opposite of ABC), but they discovered that if they did, most cable companies would drop it, since the Family Channel is part of their main family tier of something like that. So I’m not really sure what Disney is trying to do with it now, but seeing as they recently added the slogan “a whole new kind of family” to their logo, I think they’re trying to move away from family programming.
They did edit the dialogue so that it didn’t make sense, but they didn’t add any words. Luke said something like, “My sister has a history with guys, and I assumed you’d be like the others. But you seem like a pretty good guy.” TJ responds, “Thanks. You’re a dick.” Then he walks away. But the “thanks” is there; they just removed about 3 seconds after it and cut to Luke looking taken aback, apparently for no reason.
