Those new electric cars: theft danger?

I’ve seen the ads for the new electric cars on TV the last few weeks…apparently this kind of car is especially vulnerable to theft. Or is it? Perhaps it’s an easy target for carjackers, but then any vehicle would be. Apparently it’s as easy to handle as a bicycle, and maybe dealers should furnish a longer version of a bike chain, and a padlock, to secure this electric car to a bike rack…

Hard to know. My brother has an EV1 from General Motors. You have to know some digital codes to get it going, it doesn’t take a key. I used to work at a Caddy dealer back in the 70s, and it was really no trouble at all to break into a car when they keys got locked in it, which seemed to be always. Never had to hotwire one thought.

Which electric cars would this be? Are you saying that they are light enough to be lifted by a single person?

The makers of the Segway claim that they are useless without the electronic keys. The vehicle control computer itself authenticates the key, I believe, and if the computer shuts down there’s no way to ride it. I’d guess that electric cars are designed in a similar way. Of course, this doesn’t stop people from carrying away the vehicle and gutting it for parts.

Most all of the electric cars and hybrid cars are decently heavy beasts - they weigh upwards of 1500 pounds to as much as 3000 pounds, IIRC. No one is going to be carrying them off, unless a gang of Venice Beach bodybuilders is roaming through your neighborhood.
