I don’t think the tea partiers are generally racists.
But I do think that they and conservatives in general have a hyperactive sense of conflict. They have a melodramatic or mythological view of the world in which they define themselves as Heroes fighting against Evil. And so their political opponents are roped into the role of Evil Enemy.
They also feel the need to make more and more outrageous accusations, because such escalationis needed to maintain the level of hysteria, and becuase the more evil the opponent you unseated is, the bigger the hero you are.

And now here’s the part that is not simply hard, it is impossible, because it involves something that the Big People didn’t tell you to say - If a President promises to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term, and then increases it by $787 billion his first year, and then again to $1.56 trillion his second year, are you [list=A][li]dishonest, []emotionally retarded, or []both?[/list][/li]
