Those shiny twirly things

There are things that people like to hang like wind chimes. They don’t make any noise. They’re strips of plastic about 30cm to 100cm long, and twisted like a DNA strand. Many of them are “chromed” in one colour or another. They disturb me.

The big ones and aren’t so bad, as they’re so long that I find them uninteresting. The smaller (30cm) reflective ones though… They twirl. I look. So shiny, so mesmerizing. They’re like the old “star field” screen savers. I’m drawn in. Deeper and deeper. I feel as if I’m being hypnotized. It takes an effort to take my eyes off of them.

Why do they do that? (I might ask the same of the “star field” screen saver or a camp fire.) Does it mean that I might be susceptible to being hypnotized? Does it mean something else?

Best not to look at them.

I saw a wood one yesterday.

Not shiny.

WTF good is that?!

Hm. Some would say that if you haven’t got wood, you’re not worth a f*ck.

I take it you’re talking about Tranceglows?

Yes, the metallic ones.

I have one, although I haven’t put it up yet. Cost all of $3.

They’re purty!

OOOOooo gimme gimme gimme

I am nothing but an old crow - I love shiney sh*t!!

I never saw one before. Where are they sold?

They’re sold at flea markets and craft fairs and the like around here.

Oh my god, you’re a housefly!

(Some folks use these things to scare away houseflies by their reflections.)
