Thoughts on Yale Law School? Any Doper Alumni?

What are people’s thoughts on Yale Law? I just got in, much to my surprise, and everything I’m hearing about it (save for New Haven itself) make it sound like THE perfect place for me…

Dude. This is a no-brainer. Go. Go now. Send in the deposit and don’t look back.

Congratulations.

New Haven is not Boston or NYC but bear in mind that (a) you’re going to be working your ass off and won’t have THAT much time to do other stuff; (b) there is a pretty cool little community around Yale with some decent bars and restaurants (and Toad’s Place); (c) you’re only a 90 minute train ride from NYC; (d) you’ll probably be able to move wherever you want upon graduation so you’re only stuck there for 3 years; (e) you’ll join a group of very prestigious alums–Bill, Hillary, Lieberman, Pat Robertson

Again, congratulations–I think you should go for it (IAAL, but not a Yale grad).

As I mentioned in the other law school thread, you should definitely go. But you knew that already, didn’t ya? Just wanted a pat on the back eh?

Congrats!!

I spent a year at Yale doing my LL.M. - it was very challenging, great resources, marvellous faculty, and good guest lecturers, like senior judges who were taking time off from the bench. Learned a helluva lot, and it’s helped me greatly in my career. So, GO!

New Haven itself is certainly a drawback, but there’s pluses like the drama. Yale Drama School is very well-regarded (Jodie Foster went there, IIRC, and lots of other well known actors whose names escape me at the moment), so there’s always a lot of dramatic productions going, both within the University and around town. However, New Haven was my introduction to north-eastern rustbelt, and I found it a bit on the scary side at night.

One thing I found a bit odd was the student population at YLS. Lots of diversity, interesting people, etc., etc., but, well, they were grinders. I’m all for hitting the books and doing well, but these folks were a bit excessive! Just one illustration: the faculty seemed to be worried about this very trend the year I was there, so they provided the money for subsidised happy hour on Friday afternoons, to try to get the students to unwind a bit. After a couple of weeks, it was cancelled for lack of interest. Students turning down cheap beer?!?

GO!!
