Three weeks' holiday: Iceland here I come

Friday afternoon can’t come quickly enough because I’ll be starting three weeks’ holiday. I’ll be going to Iceland, Denmark and Sweden. I’ve never been to any of these countries before and I’m quite excited.

That sounds like one-hell-of-a-trip! I understand your excitement, because next Saturday, I am going to Guatemala for two weeks.

Where, exactly are you going to go, and what are you planning to do? Are you going as a group, or are you an independent traveler? Finally (and I shudder to ask), how long is the flight from Australia to Iceland going to be?

Have a fun (and safe) trip!

Australia to Iceland? Isn’t that pretty much opposite side of the globe?

Have fun!

I’ll be in a group in Iceland, but I’ll be travelling independently in Copenhagen and Stockholm.

I don’t have the exact details with me, but it’s about 28 hours or so I think. No big deal for us Australians.

There’s an Australian tour operator selling group tours to Iceland?

Where’ll you be going?

Reyjavik from London is a relatively short flight. However, it is still a long flight from Australia- that is only flight times. When i went to Dublin a few years back (flights would be of similar duration) I worked out that is was about 40 hours rom getting out of bed to getting back int one. And it was a lunch time flight out! :frowning:

Pretty much right around Iceland. I imagine it’s a fairly standard route:

Reykjavik - Pingvellir - Hraunfossar - Borgarfjordur - Snaefellsnes - Eyjafjordur - Akureyri - Godafoss - Myvatn Area - Kjolur - Hveravellir - Gullfoss - Geysir - Skaftafell National Park - Skalholt - Stokkseyril - Eyrarbakki - Hveragerdi - Reykjavik

My apologies if I’ve spelt any of these place names incorrectly.

The weather should be getting better so you should be in for a heck of a time. The places you mention aren’t actually very standard at all; not too many tourists get to see the interior (like Kjolur), for example. I hope you’re getting enough time by Lake Myvatn and Skaftafell National Park, as they’re both beautiful places to visit. Please post your experiences in Iceland, I’m curious to find out what you think of our little island.

Oh, and try the shark.

Dang this lack of editing options, dang it all to heck!

Have a great trip!

I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland!

No way I’d do Sydney - London in one go. About ten hours in economy, and I’m done. I’d be spending 48 hours on a Thai beach drinking beer and blissing out. Then, back to BKK for the next leg of the trip.

I certainly will. I’m very excited about going to Iceland. I’ve wanted to go there ever since I was a boy and I read Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

At the moment though, I’m killing time at Bangkok airport. My flight to Copenhagen doesn’t leave for another two hours…

I had a very enjoyable time in Iceland. Great weather, lovely people. The scenery was fantastic and, in fact, reminded me very much of New Zealand: volcanoes, glaciers, geothermal regions etc. I particularly enjoyed the Snaefellsnes peninsula, Lake Myvatn and Vatnajökull. The “still twilight at 3.00am” business was rather strange, but I got used to it pretty quickly.

I did find everything incredibly expensive though, far more so than Denmark and Sweden. All of us on the tour kept wondering how anybody could afford to live permanently in Iceland. I ended up buying no souvenirs at all, simply because they were so ridiculously over-priced. The only thing I indulged in was a “Learn Icelandic” textbook.

I did. I didn’t rush back for a second helping.

I was in Iceland once many years ago and loved every minute of it.

Great people, one of the oddest looking places on earth (my travelling companion said, “we have landed on the fuckin’ Moon!”) but lots to do.

I would go back in a minute.

Say hello to Bjork for me!

Wish I were going with you.

I’m sorry to keep reviving this thread; I just wanted to thank you, Cunctator, for letting us know how things went and for your kind words.

Very few tourists do; you probably just weren’t drunk enough. Sorry about the prices, the Krona is just so high now; in 2001 the Dollar was 120 ISK but is now usually around or under 60 ISK.

Y’all come back now, y’hear?

I definitely intend to return UselessGit. I’d particularly love to go back in winter, but I imagine that it’s much more difficult (even impossible?) to see very much, given that many of the roads are impassable and there are so few daylight hours. In the meantime I’m practising my Icelandic: Ég heiti Cunctator. Ég er fra Australiu.

It’s a hundred degrees outside my window right now. A place called ICEland sounds like heaven.

Hope you’re having fun!
