Throat problems...should i see a doctor?

Last night my throat started having problems…it felt like i was swallowing something too large everytime i swallowed…like maybe there was some blockage at the base of my throat. The problem has gotten worse during the last 24 hours and now it just plain hurts. I didn’t know if there actually was any blockage or it it just felt like there was, but now i think there may actually be something blocking my tract…as i was eating hot pizza, once it reached the bese of my throat i could feel the food being ‘stopped’ and the hot food slowly working it’s way down into my stomach, did not feel good at all. now every swallow is unpleasant. My tendency with things like this is to let them run their course because i don’t have health insurance or any money to pay for doctor visits for anything outside of an emergency…I was just wondering if anyone knows of something like this and if it could potentially be a problem. If this is still a problem tommorow evening, should i see a doctor? Any input would be appreciated

I am not a physician, but it could be a number of things – some ugly, some inconvenient. Is there a free clinic where you could see a doctor? Or perhaps a county hospital? Is there anyway to get at least a little insurance coverage?

Ever had strep throat? When you get it, you feel like you’ve got rocks lodged in there and it REALLY hurts to swallow anything, even just saliva… It’s a pretty common infection, but man does it make your life miserable. Look in a mirror and shine a flashlight back there… If you see lots of red and especially white lesions you should go see a doctor. Doubly so if you get a fever and start to feel sick. Strep won’t likely go away by itself, and antibiotics will knock it out pretty quick.

If nothing else, head on over to www.webmd.com and see if their self-diagnosis stuff can give you an idea of what you’re up against.

As for not having insurance, I don’t know what to suggest about that. :frowning: Good luck!

EZ

Addendum: According to WebMD, strep WILL clear itself up in 3 to 7 days… I’m just a wimp I guess, and never gave it the chance!

EZ

I’m guessing you are developing a thyroglossal duct cyst or a cyst elsewhere in the neck (like the thyroid gland). Strep throat makes for mighty painful swallowing but doesn’t feel like an obstruction and you would be feverish.

Cancerous tumors don’t grow overnight like that and cysts usually develop more slowly but have been known to pop up suddenly on occasion.

GET THEE TO A DOCTOR. Anything growing that fast in your throat can cause severe respiratory obstruction rather quickly and needs to be fixed. Not likely to be malignant but has real potential to cause a deadly mechanical obstruction if not dealt with.

Why are you still reading this? Go get your throat checked. I’m worried about you.

Thanks for the replies everyone, i wasn’t able to see a doctor but i did talk to someone with medical knowledge. The pain reached it’s peak last night after i posted…but over the course of the day the (obstruction?) seemed to have slowly migrated further down my throat and finally into my upper chest and turned into a feeling similar to heartburn, in the past few hours it has diminished considerably and i feel it’ll be all but gone tommorow. Strange to be sure, but i’m alright. Agan, thanks for the input
