I was at a concert last night with a friend. The opening act went on far to long and we began to get restless. My friend suggested throwing tomatos at the band to get them off stage.
Where did this practice of throwing tomatos, cabbages and other foods at bad acts originate? Did people actually arrive at shows with vegetables expecting a bad performance?
In the early days of Shakespearean theatre, audiences were allowed to bring their own food since some plays lasted all day.
There were no concession stands for cokes and popcorn. Anyhow, If you’ve ever smelled a rotten tomato or other brinky stuff (which was plentiful because they didn’t have Fridigaires either) you’d save the worst for the last if you were really hungry. Also, this additional matter could perhaps be sold to some hungry chap or used to display a strong dislike to a character or actor who couldn’t remember his lines.
