Hey Dopers:
That thing that dogs do with their leg (their leg not yours) when you scratch them in that special place. Why do they do that and is there a name for it?
Appreciate your help.

It’s actually called ‘thumpthumpthumpthumpthump.’
I have a cat that goes ‘scrathscratchkneadscratchscratch’ and a fish that goes ‘blupblup-bluuuuup.’
I call it the “thump spot” I actually had a cat who had one right behind his right ear.
We call it “rabbiting.” And yeah, behind the ear seems to do it for several cats.

I’ve always pictured it as something like this:
I’m being scratched.
Obviously, there’s no other dog here who might be scratching me.
Therefore I must be scratching myself.
But I’m not scratching myself.
Uh-oh, I guess I’d beter start!

I don’t think I’m doing this “scratching” thing quite right.
But hey, I’m being scratched, so I guess it must be working.
OK.
