See here. From our local international-award-winning cartoonist Stephff. Some really good ones.
I like the one of the Tibetan relay guy trying to get the Olympic flame from the Chinese to light the torch of liberty. neat.
The horns were my fave
I don’t understand the third one.
Loved the horns.
A reference to Abu Ghraib.
Looks like a couple of new ones have been added. I like the Great Wall as snake.
Again, the link is here.
And two more new ones added at the bottom.
All right, this has been bugging me since I first saw it. The (currently) third from the last cartoon shows a monk which has been shot by a Chinese soldier. The monk is surrounded by what I assume is supposed to be blood, which a large hole in his chest and his arms and legs splayed out in what seems to be rather unnatural positions. Is there some symbolism to this that I’m missing here? Or am I just overthinking this?
I was wondering that, too, but I’m not up on Tibetan symbolism. My guess is no, there’s no symbolism.
Yeah, there’s symbolism. Not Tibetan, but still.
Damn, you beat me to it. :smack: I logged on specifically because I finally remembered where I’d seen that shape before. Kept thinking I’d seen it somewhere, and it finally hit me this afternoon. So much for my guesses.
I should have recognized it sooner, because we saw it everywhere in Beijing last May. In front of I think it’s the China National Museum, or maybe the building next to it, there’s a big sign with the logo erected, and the “heart” is pulsing red. Not being a fan of the Olympics, I hadn’t given it much thought since leaving the city.
I had been only vaguely aware that the Olympics were going to be in China this year. I remember hearing about the decision of the IOC, partly because Chicago has been trying to have the Summer Olympics there for quite a while, but hadn’t been tracking it much in recent years so I hadn’t seen anything with the logo on it.
I believe Lhasa is on the route of the Olympic torch. That could be interesting when it passes through town there.
It’s still on the route. Someone running the torch in the West could be a stinker and wear a Tibetan flag shirt and there wouldn’t be much the PRC could do about it.
Don’t be so sure. They’re getting more and more belligerent about Tibet by the day. It would not surprise me if they nabbed such a runner. As important as they consider the Olympics, their grip on Tibet is much more important to them.
And there are two new Tibet cartoons on the page, at the top this time. Again, that link is here
Bumping this up because there are three new cartoons at the top. Again, the link is here.
I especially like the second one.
The one in the middle (tanks running down the track to the Unknown Rebel) is now my desktop background.
More than one runner has tried to wear a Tibetan flag only to have it snatched off by the ‘men in blue’ or Chinese Paramilitary torch guard/thugs. When in happened in Paris the runner was allowed to run but without the offending flag. When in happened in SanFran the runner was removed from the relay and pushed into the crowd and out of the street. The Australian prime minister has said the torch relay is welcome, the men in blue - not on Australian soil.
The Chinese leaders have threatened the Tibetans that if there is any disturbance when the relay passes through Tibet, they will show ‘no mercy’. Because that’s what it’s been up till now apparently, mercy.
