Tie a yellow ribbon? Drive with lights on? What kind of Tribute

I’ve seen people with red, white and blue ribbons.

I like it.

I saw a bunch of flags hung off of freeway overpasses on my way to school. That was cool. I plan on getting one to fly from my antenna.

Don’t you people own any NY Yankee stuff?

All the flags on Federal buildings and schools in Canada are flying at half-mast until further notice. Private companies are also flying their flags at half mast.

I just got home from picking up kids and we went out and bought the biggest, most beautiful flag I could afford. I just put it up.

No one else here in this little town has a flag up. Their choice, but I’m a little disappointed. The American flag is a beautiful sight anytime, but today it just looked…inspiring.

Icefalcon, I’m two hours from you. Nice to see a fellow Nebraskan on the board. I was feeling a little lonely.

Whatever anyone decides to do–I figure they have to do what they feel is right and respectful. I can appreciate that. After all, it’s the sentiment, right?

There were several flags on overpasses today on the highway in Indianapolis. I really like the idea of the grey ribbon.

Coldfire - you don’t realize how much that means. A friend of mine works in London, and is just disgusted at some of the comments he’s heard. It’s good to think they are in the minority.

Well, today as I drove in to my neighborhood, there were two kids probably between 10 and 12. They were standing on a corner by a busy 4-way stop sign.

One of them had an American flag, and the other was holding up a sign that said “SHOW YOUR COLORS! PUT OUT YOUR FLAGS!” I gave them a honk and a wave, and drove away with tears in my eyes.

LC

flags seem to be it. i saw many flags on houses and cars today.

After the fire fighters in Glenwood Springs (the 14 that died on the mountain) you could see purple ribbons throughout the Colorado River Valley…Even a couple of vineyards tied purple ribbons along the fences of the boundaries from the vineyards to the highway.

Purple ribbons might work, reminds me of the Purple Heart that the military recieves.

Just a thought.

BTW, the candle in the window is a very appropriate response as there is an organization called “Candle In the Window Project” of which I was a member of, oddly enough, during Desert Storm.

So display a purple ribbon, your American flag and a candle in the window.

I donated blood today. I sent my last $75 in the bank to the Red Cross (I’m down now to $0.78, but it’s worth it, I think).

Tomorrow I go back to school and I’ll be wearing all black, with a red, white and blue ribbon on my shirt.

I also tied red, white, and blue ribbons from my car antenna.

I wish I were helping the rescue workers find people or healing them in a hospital, but for now, this is all I can do, besides send prayers and happy thoughts.

It all seems to terribly, horribly pointless. :frowning:

I’m going to get one of my mom’s electric Christmas candle lights. I’d love to burn a candle in the window, but this house is over 200 yrs old, I’m not gonna be the one to burn it down…

It’s small, but over at another message board where I’m a moderator, the users have taken up the tribute of converting their avatars (we use vB as well, and have that option turned on) to picture involving the flag in some way.

It is really quite touching to just scroll down some of the threads. An example:

I heard in passing today that the Prime Minister of Canada has declared a country-wide day of mourning for Friday. Can any Canadians confirm this?

Never mind - just saw it confirmed in another thread (thanks, RickJay).

If I were old enough to donate blood, I would but I’m not. I don’t currently have a job and being a schoolchild I do not have much money but I did scrounge together a few dollars in spare change and donated to the collection fund at my school. Other than that, I have done nothing symbolic, but I send out my deepest sympathies to anyone injured or killed in the attacks and give many thanks to everybody helping out in any way the victims including emergency officials to regular people donating money, supplies and blood. Thank you, thank you all.

I’m disgusted! I can’t find flags anywhere in town, and I don’t see anyone flying them either. There was plenty of stuff around the 4th of July, but all I see now is Halloween and Xmas(!!!) crap! I went to Home Depot, Michael’s craft store (they had tons of flag/red/white/blue ribbon a few months ago), Party America (looking for bunting, etc) and WAL-MART for crying out loud and came home empty handed. I met a highway patrol officer looking for flag decals for his car windows and he and another woman said they’d been all over town and couldn’t find anything either. I’m pissed, not only at them, but at myself for not already owning one.

Someone on my street went out and bought small flags for every house on the street. Considering I live in a neighborhood of mostly college students and art school kids, that’s really cool.

I hoope people keep flying their flags, and I bet that at least some of the people who see your flag, Shirley, will be inspired to go out and get one.

I also saw a few signs hanging in windows today along with flags – a pentagon shape with a " l l " inside it – the Twin Towers, and also 11, for the date.

At work we were discussing the idea of wearing ribbons of red white and blue. A co-worker of mine has a Steaming Ensign (the flag that flew over his ship on a trip across the Atlantic when he was in the Navy). The CEO of our company has asked to borrow it to fly over one of our buildings. Mike brought it to work today. Until the maintenance crew gets out to put it up (our flagpole is on the roof), Mike has it hanging in his classroom. The flag is old, tattered, and dirty, but it’s one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Our training department is trying to get the Red Cross to come out to do a blood drive (which would be great, because I am having trouble getting an appointment). They also want to do a “Red Cross Week” where they will invite people from the neighborhood to stop in and learn CPR and First Aid.

Today on the way to work I noticed that there was a small American flag in the middle of the street. Not only did cars swerve to avoid running over it, a guy ran into the street (after making sure it was safe) to retrieve the flag. Made me feel good.

Our local newspaper published a full-page insert of a flag today, for people to display. Good thing, too–I hear the stores in this area are sold out of real flags.

I think I’ll spend the evening with my yarn, and make a buttload of red, white, and blue ribbon pins. I’ve got a glue gun and some pin backs. Pass them out to my coworkers, if they want them.
