What is it specifically that you don’t like about him?
I am sure Tiger will go on for at least several years, trying to beat Nicklaus’s 18. Tom Watson almost won a major at the age of 59 so Tiger still has some time.
You sure? I don’t think he can ever repay us. After all we’ve done for him, what has he ever done for us, other than providing 25 years of thrilling entertainment?
Ben Hogan almost died in his car accident. His physical incapacity was far worse than Tiger’s. Trust me on this, while Tiger’s win is a great example of overcoming physical incapacity, it’s not even close to what Ben Hogan managed. And, let’s keep in mind that Hogan won six of his nine majors after the accident. Let’s see what Woods actually accomplishes over the rest of his career before anointing him as the greatest comeback story of golf.
Also keep in mind that Hogan played an average of less than two majors a year after his accident. He could have played the British Open every year, but it was just a historical curiosity then, not worth the time and expense it entailed, so he only played it once in his life. He only played the PGA three times after his accident, because the match play format it used through most of the 1950’s required the winner to play 36 holes a day for several consecutive days, and his legs simply couldn’t endure that. The PGA didn’t change to stroke play until 1958, when Hogan was 46 years old.
Just updating the thread to note that Tiger isn’t as “back” as perhaps it seemed. Though maybe “back” is an accurate descriptor, given the appearance of the KT Tape…
Nonsense, Tiger’s roar was heard at Pebble Beach, just like this pundit predicted:
*"Tiger Woods returns to the scene of his greatest performance for this week’s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, no longer necessarily the man to beat but a definite threat to win his 16th major title.
Woods’ form at the recent Memorial tournament, where he tied for ninth, combined with his love for and knowledge of Pebble Beach suggest he will not be far away come Sunday on the fabled California coast."*
True, he finished tied for 21st but he was under par the last round and closed with some birdies! Tiger is back! Tiger Tiger Tiger!!!
We can expect more predictions about Woods being a top contender again for years to come, possibly even after he qualifies for Social Security.
Right, he hasn’t won a major for over two months, and he’s only ranked #5 in the world (from #1200 a year and a half ago). :smack:
You know what, there’s nothing especially wrong with being completely clueless about golf, but I don’t know why you want to advertise it.
If you’re interested in golf history, turn on the Golf Channel. Tiger is in contention (actually leading by 3 as I write this), seven holes away (after a weather delay yesterday) from winning his 82nd PGA event, tieing Sam Snead’s all-time record.
The Zozo Championship is not a familiar name, but it’s not a cupcake. It’s essentially a WGC, with World #2 Rory, #4 Justin, and #8 Xander in the field, and almost all the rest from the world top 60. Rory shot a 63 yesterday to pull into 3rd.
Despite the weird time (3:45 PDT right now), this is live.
And he wins!
Third PGA win in 13 months, and that’s with another knee surgery just a couple months ago that kept him from practicing full time both before and after. He shot 64-64-66-67 to beat a world class field by 3. Looked very comfortable with the driver.
Hope he can stay healthy.
Those scores are a trifle misleading, as the course was effectively a Par 69. But the quality of the field and the win aren’t.
Yeah, I’m kind of mystified by the idea that he owed any kind of debt to society. He violated the trust of his wife, to be sure, but AFAIK his worst offense otherwise was one instance of DUI (charged as “reckless driving”), for which his “debt” was $250.
In case you haven’t heard and are interested, Tiger is playing in a charity match today on semi-free TV. Tiger and Peyton Manning vs Phil and Tom Brady, live. Proceeds, including a $10 million donation from the players and network, go to Covid relief activities.
Sunday, May 24. Live TV coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET
Television Broadcast: TNT, TBS, truTV, HLN, HLN in Canada, CNN International
When did TNT, TBS, HLN etc. become “semi-free TV”?
Well, maybe it beats 20-year-old SEC football game tapes.
Sorry to confuse you, but I think most people understand what I mean. You can’t get it with just an antenna, but it’s on enough channels that most people in the US, who have a cable or streaming subscription, won’t have to pay extra for it, like they would for a pay-per-view event.
And if you have an internet connection, which you seem to, you can sign up for a free trial of Fubo and watch it online.
Things not looking great for Tiger – now a decade into his “comeback” – after the second round of the PGA Championship.
