“Tightness” in late 70s bands, and in general

That song came out when I was in late elementary school and, being young assholes, all we could say about it was, “Hur Hur. Only Women Bleed: it’s about menstruation. Get it!”

Rereading the lyrics now makes me embarrassed. It’s true horror from a guy who specialized in comic book horror.

I’m off by not even three months when this was recorded; this pasage from “21st Century Schizoid Man” is, well, yeah, tight:

Fair enough, but after the 90125/ 9012Live era, the band was a mess of comings and goings. Yeah, they did the 35th Anniversary Tour that was pretty delicious, and I for one am a massive fan of both ABWH and ARW.

But as Yes? I dunno, they were such a mess…[quote=“Cartooniverse, post:125, topic:947784, full:true”]

Love it! Never heard of ‘em until now.

Reviving this because I’ve been reliving my love of the Meat Puppets and listening again to their catalog. They are an odd band that is both tight, and also teetering on the brink of destruction.

Tight - Maiden’s Milk. Damn, love this bass:

Not what I would call tight, but I would call awesome:

Now, i know i mentioned Tower of Power, but it occurred to me, listening
to this tune, that maybe
they can be too tight, starting to sound a bit synthy.

Heheh, I don’t remember what rock journal I read it in, but the Kirkwood brothers were described as a couple of brothers who created their own personal musical worlds to explore. I have to agree. They could be so loose it was about to come apart, but they were also spot on tight sometimes. Split Myself in Two has both.

In the category of just unbelievably tight for the number of musicians involved, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen are amazing. I had listened to this record many times before my brother pointed out just how fast this version of Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette) was. It’s just about punk rock fast, and they hit every stop. Most of this live record is exactly as good as this track.
