We’ve got Travertine flooring in our home. W/regard to when it requires re-sealing, I was told that if you spill water on it, and it beads up (vs. soaks in), sealing is not required. Sounds logical to me. Can anyone confirm?
Well, I can’t agree with this.
It’s better if water beads up, but you don’t know if it’s sealed until YOU seal it. Also, water is not the concern. Water isn’t going to kill it. There are hundreds of things that your floor will experience which might permeate and stain it.
I love Travertine. SEAL IT.
To be more clear: I’d consider it homeowner insanity to walk on and use an unsealed Travertine floor.

I’m told there are topical sealers and those that actually permeate the tile. Is this true? If so, which is better?
It should be OK if it beads up. But if it’s in a well used area, seal it every year or two.
There are the two kinds of sealers you mentioned, but I’m not sure which is best for travertine. Do a little searching on the internet and you’ll find the answer.
A good sealer permeates.
Applying a tile sealer over an old sealer or different sealer may lead to problems like discolouration, hazing or even pealing if the old sealer is not sufficiently worn out.
Go to a stone tile supplier; not home depot, a flooring store, or but a tile supplier that specializes in stone and slate tile supply and installation. Get their opinion.
Use a product they recommend and apply it according to directions.
