Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010)

I’m excited for this. I love Alice in Wonderland, and I think a Tim Burton version would be pretty sweet.

As for the American McGee version, I remember some time ago finding it on IMDB and seeing Eliza Dushku slated to play Alice. Apparently it does keep changing.

I meant to add, I think Evan Rachel Wood would be a good Alice in the Tim Burton version.

No, both that and Jabberwocky are in Looking Glass.

I liked “Sleepy Hollow” and “Sweeney Todd”, how did you feel about “Big Fish”? that was his best in a long time. At least since “Edward Scissorhands”

:smack:

You’re right! It’s the Tweedles that recite for her…

She was excellent as Princess Mombi in “Return to Oz”.

“Big Fish” was all right. I didn’t like “Sleepy Hollow” or “Edward Scissorhands.” I have to admit that his style fit “Sweeney Todd” very well. I think the only film of his I’ve thoroughly enjoyed was “Ed Wood.”

All a matter of taste, of course. As Abe Lincoln said, “People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like.” Still, I don’t want to get anywhere near his “Alice.”

Agreed.

That would be brilliant.

I’ve seen this version of Through the Looking Glass and I think it’s surprisingly good. I’m still hoping for an American Mcgee version of Alice. That was an interesting idea for a plot.

I’ve bumped this thread with casting news. Tim Burton has cast Alice. An Australian actress, Mia Wasikowska. I don’t recognise her, but that’s not surprising as I’ve never seen any of the things she’s done.

Not at all who I would’ve imagined he’d choose, though. I can’t predict his stylistic approach on this one, based on her casting.

Y’know, I’d almost prefer Alice be played by someone I don’t recognize. Then I’ve got no basis for comparison to previous work and can see a fresh face giving it a shot.

I always thought it was illegal to film a live-action Alice without casting every has-been actor/hoofer/singer within 25 zipcodes of Hollywood. Kind of a showbiz Social Security type thing.

Bumping this again to give a link to (allegedly) the first picture of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Some people are claiming that it’s Photoshopped. I guess we’ll find out.

Here’s the full cast listing from IMDB:

Mia Wasikowska … Alice
Johnny Depp … The Mad Hatter
Anne Hathaway … The White Queen
Michael Sheen … The Cheshire Cat
Helena Bonham Carter … The Red Queen
Alan Rickman … Caterpillar
Crispin Glover … The Knave of Hearts
Christopher Lee

Eleanor Tomlinson … Fiona Chataway
Matt Lucas … Tweedledee / Tweedledum
Frances de la Tour … Aunt Imogene
Jemma Powell … Margaret Kingsley
Tim Pigott-Smith … Lord Ascot
Geraldine James … Lady Ascot (rumored)
John Hopkins … Lowell
Lucy Davenport

Being a very strange and deprived kid, I’ve never read any Alice books or seen any Alice productions. There are vague cultural-by-osmosis references I know, because I’ve of course seen/heard them in movies, books and TV shows (Monty Python!), but for the most part it’s all an unknown quantity to me. The closest to Alice I’ve ever gotten is seeing the movie Dreamchild, and reading the Riverworld series by Phillip Jose Farmer, where the grownup Alice Pleasance Liddell Hargreaves is a lead character.

So, not everybody, adults or children, is familiar with this story. I’m looking forward to the movie to finally see what it’s all about. I have high hopes.

It is Photoshopped, undoubtedly. The question is, is it only one pic from the ton of conceptual art, or is it the final chosen look for the character?

There’s a truly disturbing resemblance there to Helena Bonham Carter Burton.

And I thought I was the only one who read the two Alice books at least once a year (and have been doing so for more than 50 years). In another SD thread currently underway I mention Disney’s* Alice *as one of my all-time favorite 5 movies.

So we have an 18 year old Alice? :frowning:
Well I did think the Depp and Carter casting was pretty obvious. I wonder who Lee will play? I can’t think of a character unless they have a narrator in this version.

Alan Rickman as the hookah smoking caterpillar? Well, the caterpillar was fairly snarky as I recall, so I guess that makes sense. For some reason I have come to picture the caterpillar as Cheech or Chong but that is my own problem.

Ah, ok, thanks. I only looked at it for a few seconds. This is one movie where I really don’t want to see a lot of photos, and I’m not going to watch trailers, clips, or read reviews before seeing the film. I have a feeling that reviewers will assume everybody knows everything about the story and could easily give away huge spoilers while talking about the production values or whatever. After today I’ll probably stay out of this or any other thread about the movie. I do want to be at least 98% surprised.

Especially regarding the Cheshire Cat. I’ve seen a drawing or two through the years, and vaguely get the impression that he’s a sly one who causes trouble. Knowing that Michael Sheen is that character makes me happy, even though I don’t even know why, because I don’t know the character. I just love Michael Sheen. Tony Blair in The Queen, David Frost in Frost/Nixon, the Lycan Lucian in the Underworld series (which I just found out on IMDB, not having seen the first two Underworld movies), on and on, now the Cheshire Cat. What an eclectic actor!

After I see the movie, then I’ll almost certainly read the book(s).

If you read the books, read the splendidly annotated version edited by Martin Gardner.

Oh, seconded! The annotated version explains so many things that aren’t even really noticed (or are noticed and puzzled over) due to their existence as trivia of everyday life and current events in late 19th-Century Victorian England.
