Time from theatrical release to Netflix streaming

Recently the The Film Sack Podcast reviewed Season of the Witch.

Now, it turns out the movie sucked and Nicholas Cage should be ashamed of himself (spoilers for those who have not seen this 2011 blockbuster)

One interesting thing they discussed was the extremely short time between the theatrical release and the movie showing up on Netflix. Is this a discussed phenomenon? Are there records? (straight to DVD not included).

I think I’m the only person that actually liked that film…

Season of the Witch went from the theaters (January 7, 2011) to DVD (June 28, 2011) in 172 days.

Here’s how long tomorrow’s DVD releases took to make it to DVD:

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - 179 days
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance - 116 days
Good Deeds - 109 days

So not only isn’t it the quickest theatrical-to-DVD release movie, it isn’t even the quickest theatrical-to-DVD release movie starring Nicholas Cage, which itself wasn’t even the theatrical-to-DVD release movie released on DVD that week.

Rifftrax needs to do Season of the Witch.

Some outlets will not stock a DVD without a theatrical release. I believe Wal-Mart won’t. WWE films always does a one-week limited release just for that reason. They don’t expect any box office; they expect to make money off DVD sales and rentals.

Yeah, those WWE crapfests tend to have their special theatrical engagement on a Friday, then show up in Walmart the following Tuesday.

But even those aren’t the shortest times. There have been, on occasion, movies released to DVD before the limited theatrical runs. Usually, it’s nothing you’d particularly want to see anyway. Survival of the Dead, for instance. That one’s got a really messed up release history. UK DVD first, then UK video on demand, then UK theatrical. US release had the DVD release moved to the last, but still debuted on demand before the limited theatrical run.

I admire you for being strong enough to admit it. Are we talking about the same movie?:D:D:D:p

One for the Money: also 109 days. (Not sure if its streamed at Netflix yet. It is on Amazon and iTunes.). Given a movie is usually released in theaters on a Friday, comes out on DVD on a Tuesday, and Netflixed/etc. 28 days later, the next lower number is 102 days. Any takers?
