Time Person of the Year

And he’s even better-looking than Miley Cyrus.

Now I’m willing to commit and say its going to be the Pope.

I just heard on a news broadcast that five minutes ago, Time had announced that Pope Frank was first and Snowden second, so the TSD board was right on.

Who is Miley Cyrus. Seriously.

I narrowed my choices down to Pope Francis and Edward Snowden, and ended up choosing Snowden. Pope Francis is a fine man and will no doubt have a significant impact on Catholics but I felt that the release of data by Edward Snowden impacted a much larger audience.

There are 1.2 Billion Catholics in the world. What appears to be an attempted paradigm shift in the church is huge. Snowden will soon be forgotten and what he did is transitory.

The latest teenybopper-turned-drug-addled-slut-for-record-sales.

I didn’t see this poll until after I heard the announcement, so it was an easy vote. Before hand though, I might have given the edge to Snowden.

For the record - and I know you’re paraphrasing - the Vatican doesn’t think sex is sinful. They want nothing more than married Catholic couples to be fruitful and multiply and make tons and tons of new Catholic babies.

All other sex is sinful, yes.

Nice

True, too. Which is a shame, because Miley used to be cute.

That’s pretty much where I came down. I think Francis will make a bigger difference over time, but not yet. So far the main effect of his words has been to make a lot of people, inside and outside of the RCC, feel better about the Church.

And maybe someone else would have played Snowden’s part eventually if Snowden hadn’t done so. But we don’t know either how long we would have had to wait, or whether they would have done it in nearly as effective a manner. There were a lot of ways this could have been fucked up by a potential whistleblower in ways that would have discredited the whole business.

I guess I could have googled him. But thanks.

The Time person of the year can’t be taken seriously. Some of the people chosen have been absurd. Osama didn’t even wind up being the most influential person of the year in 2001 or in any of the years following. “You” was even a person and they had a reflective cover, which sounds more like Highlights Magazine person of the year.

Several years ago someone wrote a conspiracy piece about how Obama was really a middling student at Harvard and how he just got his prestige because he was black. Someone linked to it here, so I poked around to find out about the author. In his CV, the author included the note that he’d been Time’s Person of the Year.

You’ll never guess which year.

It may be the chutzpahziest thing I’ve ever seen.

I’m not religious, but i do believe Pope Francis is the best contender for person of the year. His openness and acceptance of atheists and gays may seem like common sense for most, but it is pretty radical for the conservative catholic faith. Also, its pretty cool to hear the leader of a religion that so often condemns me to hell to openly say that i am not a bad person for my personal beliefs. Its not that i want or need the approval of religious people, but Its good to know that the leader of a religion that so often is dogmatic and patronizing towards those who are different is more open minded and accepting.

According to documentary evidence, Miley’s willing to air out… all sorts of things… however, that doesn’t get one named Person of the Year.

And just to point out, he becomes the third pope to be named Time’s Man of the Year, after Pope John XXIII in 1962 and Pope John Paul II in 1994.

Ratiznger… always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

I didn’t even know Kathleen Sebelius’s colon was in the running.

My reasoning was that he is elected and is 76 so his time as Pope will be short. Whether his reforms extend beyond his term was something I could not predict. I certainly hope they do, although I am not a Catholic.

Were all the people listed in the poll actually candidates? Miley Fucking Cyrus!?!?
