I had sort of lost interest in my Aerogardens for a bit, but I’ve gotten back into them, this time, growing a couple more…interesting crops (no, no controlled substances, don’t jump to conclusions…)
I’ve gotten somewhat bored with the typical culinary herbs like basil, oregano, thyme and the like, also, even though I love fresh, vine ripened tomatoes, growing them takes more patience than I can generally deal with
Last week, I tore down my Salba experiment (Salba is also known as Chia, yes, the same plant on those silly “Chia Pets”), the Salba got to about 1.5 feet tall, but was extremely sensitive to water temperature and air temperature, you look at it funny and it wilts, it’s more sensitive than the touch-sensitive “sensitive plant” (which I’ve also grown hydroponically, interesting plant, gets quite big…)
This week, I set up three cherry tomato seeds in my tall Aerogarden, and also planted three pods of Black Japonica rice, the rice has actually sprouted, and is already almost an inch tall! and that’s in less than four days!
I have no idea how big Japonica grows, or even if it will go to seed and produce rice, this is more a proof-of-concept than anything, and so far, it seems to be working, heck, I even replanted one pod last night, had Basmanti rice in it that never sprouted, I dumped those rice grains, put in some more Japonica, and less than 24 hours later, they’ve started to sprout
The tomatoes are being lazy though, if they don’t hurry up, they may find themselves replaced with more Japonica rice…
In the other Aerogarden, I’ve planted some Ruby Streaks Mustard Greens, and some Outredgeous red Romaine lettuce, the Rubies have sprouted, and the baby leaves look a lot like baby Broccoli leaves, makes sense, as they’re both members of the Brassica family (Cabbage, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Collards), and the Outredgeous have also taken off quite well, I d have a couple straggler pods on this one as well, so they may be replanted with Collard seeds, or maybe even Brussels Sprouts
Should be interesting…
