Arrgh! It’s right there on your list, too. I even searched it (but didn’t scroll). Sorry dantheman.
Say, how about Z? Great political thriller!
::scrolling your list, checking it twice::

I would recommend Crimes of Passion (unrated version if you can find it).
Just watched 25th Hour (2002) last week. It’s one of the better movies I’ve watched in the last couple of years. Arguably the best Spike Lee movie and it stars Edward Norton.
Sorry I didn’t get the URL thing to come out right, but it still works.
Does Roots count as a movie? Either way, if you haven’t seen it I recommend it.
Also, My Dog Skip, The Black Cauldron, Fantasia 2000… that’s all I could come up with for now.
I’ll recommend one that I just saw Friday night that isn’t on your list, Roger Dodger. It bears a great deal of similarity to Swingers, which I love but notice you only gave 2.5 stars. Anyway, Roger has very clever writing and pretty good acting (though not much star power, except for Isabella Rosselini and a very hot Elizabeth Berkeley). You should definitely see it.
I third the recommendation for Donnie Darko, since it’s already been recommended.
As for what hasn’t been touched on yet, you could try Miracle Mile, which was just released on DVD a couple weeks ago, so Blockbuster should have it. It’s one of my old favorites, and is well worth seeing.
Also, Rob Roy is a pretty good movie, sort of in the Braveheart vein, though trading the huge epic battles for one great one-on-one swordfight at the end.
I didn’t see anyone mention The Iron Giant… it’s one of the best animated movies I’ve seen in a long time. Just brilliant.
One more, sorry… Session 9 is a seriously scary movie, and fairly disturbing. If you’re into horror films at all, this one’s a great.
And yet another… The Changeling, an older movie with George C. Scott.
Jeez, I’ll go on all day. That’s enough for now.

My wife and I recently rented and really enjoyed About a Boy, with Hugh Grant. The whole cast is really good, it’s funny, touching and not too predictable which is what I was fearing. I see you have seen Four Weddings and Notting Hill, so you must not have anything against Mr. Grant.
Incidentally, dan, if you want to put up your IMDB “Must see” movies list, you can either do a File | Save As and upload it (not sure about copyright issues here though), or simply select the table and copy the list into a text document. I’m actually looking at my “My Movies” list now, and fortunately the selection goes over the table without going over anything else.
May I suggest “Animals are Beautiful People.” Done by Jamie Uys, who did The Gods Must Be Crazy. A documentary, but quite a cute little film about the Calahari (sp?).
Also, Rita Hayworth & Glen Ford in “Gilda” make “The Grifters” look like a daycare center.
Here are a few from my DVD collection;
8MM - Very taught, atmospheric movie until the last 1/2 hour. Still worth watching though.
Society and/or Reanimator - If you like Evil Dead II/III you’ll probably like these 2 movies although finding them at Blockbuster may not be easy.
Here is a link to my DVD collection where you might find some other stuff of interest you haven’t seen yet
Yikes! I go to sleep, presto - a lot of posts to respond to.
I’ll get to you guys when I get to work (!), but Fang, I tried that. It refused to save it, for some reason. Said there was an “error.” I’ll try it again from work.
Ok, see if this link works. Saved as html, uploaded to Geocities.
By the way, that list is sorted by IMDb rating, but you can sort it by title by clicking the appropriate column. Also, bear in mind that it’s using the IMDb title, which in some cases is in the film’s original language, like One Upon a Time in the West.
koeeoaddi: I haven’t seen Z, although I did see Missing, also by Costa-Gravas. Good choice.
Bugnorton: I bet Blockbuster won’t have the unrated Crimes of Passion, but it’s worth a looksee.
green_bladder: Hadn’t heard much about 25th Hour, but I do like Spike Lee films in general.
I see Super Gnat is into children’s films! I definitely should see Fantasia 2000, especially on DVD, and My Dog Skip has a beagle in it, right? (I have one.) The Black Cauldron was one of those that Disney held off on releasing for a long time, but is it worth it?
Fang: I don’t think I’ve heard of Roger Dodger; I thought Swingers was okay, perhaps a little too self-referential, but still pretty likable.
Avalonian: Miracle Mile has a great premise (I think); Leonard Maltin thought it sucked. He and I disagree wildly in a lot of things, though, so it’s worth a shot. Also worth a shot are Rob Roy and The Iron Giant, especially the latter. For Session 9, I think I’ve been subconsciously confusing it with Series 7.
(Sorry to do the quote thing below the post…)
Boyo Jim:
Up in Smoke is on the list; it’s just listed under U. Don’t ask me why. It made sense at the time. I’m Gonna Get You Sucka’s there, too.
For some reason, My Man Godfrey isn’t, although I did see it.
Dr. Strangelove is, too - under “Dr.” and so is Strange Days.
I’ll certainly consider the rest, though - thanks!
Funny thing about About a Boy and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which Boyo Jim submitted. Both times I rented the DVD and taped it to watch it the next day. Both times it didn’t tape. Same thing happened to The Fast and the Furious. It’s not the DVD’s “fault”; I just didn’t record properly.
Yes, you may. I liked both “Gods” films. And Gilda’s a bit of a thriller/mystery, then? I don’t think I looked at it too closely before.
I don’t think I’ve heard of Society, but I do want to see Reanimator.
I want to wait on 8MM. My theory is that there are two times to get a movie - when it first comes out and everyone’s talking about it, or later after it’s been out for quite a while and people revere it, kind of accord it some high status as an “excellent movie.” It’s not been out long enough for the latter to occur, but it well may turn out to be thought of as a classic.
Good list, too. I see we like a lot of the same stuff!
Here’s my inventory: here
Here’re a couple you might find at **Ballbusters/b]: My Life As A Dog and Highway 61.
