I despise Isiah Thomas as much as anybody, but the guy is comedy gold and an absolute joy to have in the public eye (said by someone who has never had a beloved team ruined by him.
With his recent hiring into the college basketball coaching ranks at Florida International, I fully believe the clock has already started ticking on his next ridiculous public destruction of an organization. To date he has irritated a country with his dubious management (Canada), underachieved as a coach with a decent team (Indiana), destroyed an entire league (the CBA), and did any number of lewd and unspeakable acts of destruction against one of the NBA’s premier franchises (New York). As a bonus, he also apparently tried to commit suicide and then blame it on his daughter when found out.
Clearly, this sets the bar very high for his next act of clueless sabotage. Or, it sets the ridiculous meter off the charts. So, what will he do to destroy FIU? When will he do it? And, how many people will go down with him?
I predict that during recruiting visits prior to the 2010 season (let’s say June) he will somehow start a missile based war with Cuba that results in the destruction of South Beach and the Florida Keys.
The great thing is, for most people that would completely absurd. But, with Isiah, you can actually rationalize a way that could happen.
Didn’t the only other D-I team with “International” in its name (U.S. International) disappear off the face of the earth? I don’t mean the basketball team, I mean the entire university.
Tell you what, I wouldn’t be confident about being a member of the Florida International Class of 2013.
That’s what I was going to say. There’s no way he doesn’t pull a Kelvin Sampson, and multiply it by about a thousand. On top of that, none of his students will go to a single class or graduate. He’ll make Cincinnati look like Duke.
I’ll give the guy some credit. I predicting him turning Florida International and turning them into a school with a history like Duke in 4-6 years if he gets to stay that long to make an impact with the players, the recruiting, and the attitude change.
Does anybody remember isaah the player? That guy is one of the best basketball players of all time. While I appreciate the comedy he has provided and as bill simmons would put it, he has definatley entered the “Tyson zone,” I’m kinda hoping he succeeds. He deserves better. Not to defend anything he has done, he’s been a terrible gm coach and commishinar. And the episode with his daughter was dispicable. Still, I really enjoyed watching him and I wish we could remember that.
I second this. I think he’ll do something shady and pull a couple of really good players of questionable character that will lead to some comparatively good seasons for FIU, possibly even a conference win and an NCAA tournament berth. Some other school higher up the food chain will get suckered and bring him in. Meanwhile, FIU will get investigated and their program shuttered.
