Time to share with Coldfire

      • I’m not much for the earliest semi-metal stuff, myself- that’s all I can tell ya. I think just about every album they put out has been mentioned! - MC
  • “You don’t just buy a Doors album, man. You start with the basics.”

Why certainly! I was only referring to the four Rush fanatics I knew of…more are ALWAYS welcome!

I’m not exactly a Rush “fan” in the true sense of the word, however, I like a lot of their songs. But the drummer (whose name escapes me now) is probably the best drummer in all of rock.

Neil, Neil, orange peel!

With a sig line like that, you’d think he remembered

The drummers name is Neil Peart. And he is the best, maybe alongside Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. Who taught himself drumming by playing Neil Peart pieces… backwards!

I like their music okay. My hubby, however, is a huge Rush fan. I asked him which album is his favorite and he said “the first one”. I forgot to ask what the name of it was.

Rush? :o Ilistened to a lot of rock, now I’m drawing a blank. Of course there are dozens of big names I never listened to.

Sunbear…You ever hear of the song “Tom Sawyer”? “Red Barchetta”? “Limelight”? “Big Money”?

Those are just a few of their songs.

Bah. Rush hasn’t put out a good album since Moving Pictures. I just couldn’t follow the style transition. And our cat is named after a Rush song, for God’s sake.

Anything prior to that, 2112, hemispheres, Farewell to Kings, absolutely kicks ass.

Still trying to think of something witty to say here

Zeb - your comment about your cat reminded me of one of the “Deep Rush Thoughts” I read some time ago - something along the lines of “What do the guys call their pets, since they can’t name them Geddy, Neil, or Alex like us?” :: inoffensive text smile ::

As for me, my recently deceased cat had the discreet middle name of Lee appended to an unrelated first name. My less-subtle brother named his cat Alex, being more a guitar than bass fan. (My brother, that is, not the cat, who was musically tolerant but indifferent.)

The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare let go.

Mully - I suggest that you rent a time machine and ao to one of the “Moving Picture Tour” concerts. Rush is absolutely one of the best concert bands I have ever seen. Neil Pert’s drum set was awesome, enough to make us poor table-top thumb thumpers bow in adulation. Moving freely back and forth between hard driving guitar rock to smooth acoustic ballads kept the music fresh and interesting for the whole show.

'Course it helped that I went in liking them…

Maybe someday he’ll find the right key.

Come and get me, ya wankers.

I would just like to point out that of all of the Coldfire threads, it looks like this one is the longest survivor.

That ought to be worth something.

Oh boy, my first official case of sig line writer’s block.

Major Rush fan #6 checking in here. Geddy Lee was a major influence in my learning the bass. The first thing I ever learned to play all the way through was 2112. I can’t believe that Permenant Waves hasn’t been mentioned. It would certainly be on my top 5. I would be hard pressed to nail down a short list of favorite albums; because of the dramatic shift in sound the band has taken through their lives I find I have “floating” favorites. Sometimes I’m in that synthesizer art-deco mood and think Signals & P/g are the best. The next day I’ll need the heavy handed sounds of Caress of Steel or Counterparts.

It would be easier to put together a list of favorite tracks (just off the top of my head; I’ll most likely change my mind later):

YYZ
La Villa Strangiato
Cygnus X-1 (parts 1 & 2)
2nd Nature
Nobody’s Hero

And most all of the remaining intrumentals.

I think it’s cool that they’ve never appeared on any of their album covers (front, anywho) opting instead for some clever graphic by Hugh Syme, et. al.

Hugh Syme kicks ASS !

Also, I like most intrumentals too. But what’s up with that “Limbo” song on TFE? Terrible.

OK. Since there REALLY are some, here are my top 5 terrible Rush songs:

  • Thai Shan (great lyrics, wimpy music)
  • Limbo
  • In the mood (acceptable music, AWFUL lyrics  )
  • errrrrr…
  • … DAMN.

Make that a Top 3 then

Best rush album: Moving Pictures (hy, sometimes the majority is right.)

Best rush song: By-Tor And The Snow Dog (How many of you saw that one coming?)

The best lack all conviction
The worst are full of passionate intensity.

Moving Pictures was definitely Rush’s best album.
That said, it pales in comparison to the Grateful Dead’s worst album.
