Time’s 2016 Person of the Year is…
(As if it would be anyone else.)
You know who else was once Person of the Year? Yeah, him.
Hasn’t it been the case for the the past 20 years or so that the POTY for U.S. presidential election years is the president-elect? It’s become sorta an automatic “honor.”
On edit, a quick Google search revelas that since 1976 the pres-elect has been POTY for each election year.
I guessed wrong. I thought it was Godwin.
Although I’m going to walk that back. According to Wiki, 1984 went to someone else, same for ’88 and ’96. While every pres since Eisenhower save for Ford has been Person of the Year at least once, they have not necessarily won for a year in which they were elected. Indeed, Nixon “won” two years consecutively but neither was an election year.
Apparently, it was a pretty close decision.

It makes sense, of course, to name him Person of the Year, but his ego really doesn’t need any more inflation.

Of course I came in to say the same basically. I like and voted for him but man the ego has to have jumped 100% by 1000’s maybe millions!

I had whoever won the election penciled in, but when it turned out to be Trump, I thought that Time might choose someone else because of the “unwritten” selection criteria - “don’t choose someone who will cause subscribers to cancel and advertisers to withdraw,” which I think happened when Ayatollah Khomeini was chosen in 1979, and I would not be surprised if it was the main reason Osama bin-Laden was not chosen in 2001.
No I don’t. I never paid any attention to him. I’ve heard the name, but never knew what he looks like.
This selection was a slam dunk. Probably unanimous among those who had any vote in the choice.
The funny thing is that he will see this as an honor or award instead of simply an acknowledgment that he was the person most influencing the news this year. How long before he tweets about this great recognition?
I once made a “You know who else…” joke on a friend’s Facebook post. The very next reply was from Mike Godwin. I had no idea he was friends with this guy I went to high school with.
I saw a “Did TIME give Donald Trump devil horns?” link on a major mainstream news site.
Dammit, just no. I refuse to click that shit.
