Some restaurants have coupons where you can buy one dinner, and get a second dinner for free, or for half price, or something along those lines. My question is do you tip them on the price of the bill after the discount? Or before?
I usually tip them as if the discount wasn’t there. I figure they’re doing the same amount of work, so why should they be short changed just because I brought in a coupon. Anyway, what’s the consensus here?
As a former waitress, I must inform the world…ALWAYS TIP BASED ON THE BILL BEFORE ANY DISCOUNTS ARE TAKEN!!! Just because you aren’t paying for the meal doesn’t mean we didn’t have to serve it to you…
& why do people think they don’t have to include the cost of any alcoholic beverages consumed when calculating the tip?
Hooboy, this is a very major issue for waitstaff and customers alike.
I used to manage a resturant and our owner published so many freakin coupons…
The point is, always tip on the full amount, before the coupon is deducted.
I had to deal with so much bitching on behalf of the waitstaff it was unbelievable.
Also, there is a $1.00 minimum tip per person at dinner. Two people share a $5 appetizer and only have water? the tip is $2! I don’t care if it’s 40%, you’ve taken time at a table and ordered $5 worth of food. Suck it up and take care of your waitstaff!
