TIPS program

I was teasing my USPS mail carrier today about whether she was going to turn me in as a subversive for getting the public television guide. She drew herself up and proudly told me that USPS had refused to participate. She added, “I’m not sure if it was our union, or who made the decision, but we refuse to violate the sanctity of private mail!”

  1. Anybody know if it was their union, or who made the decision?

  2. Any other national services, organizations, or unions come out strongly one way or the other on pressing their personnel into spying? (Not that I have any feelings about it  ).

I’m not a usps employee, but I got the impression from the newspaper that the concern was more about the safety of letter carriers than the sanctity of private mail. They didn’t want some postman getting shot as a snoop by someone who had something to hide. I don’t know who made the decision.

USPS made the decision. Unions don’t make decisions for the agencies, but the agencies will listen to what the unions have to say.
