Once in a blue moon you’ll see someone sit down & rest & say something to the effect “My dogs are tired”. I know the phrase refers to the feet, but how, or when, did it originate?
Thanx
If I answer you, will you quit asking questions about “dog” phrases? Well, I can’t find an answer. Try e-mailing Dave Wilton or one of the other phrase origin fellows out there on the 'net. I’ve also heard this phrase as “My dogs are barking”, which makes even less sense.
Well, ‘my dogs are barking’ draws from the fact that your feet (dogs) are drawing attention to themselves. Dogs do this by barking. Feet do this by aching (or stinking; I’ve heard the phrase in both contexts).
