I don’t hate people, but when I read stuff I just end up hating everyone. Not in a real evil hate, but like… how teenagers say they hate whoever doesn’t like their favorite band. That type of hate. Only, mine is a little more. I’d say, one step shy of true, hate hate.
I can only read so much of the internet per day. I usually visit one entertainment site, four news sites, a few pet adoption sites, then the Dope. I’ve narrowed this list over the years, although I went through a YTMND and FARK phase.
Sometimes, there’s just not a whole lot happening on the internet, and that’s OK. It’s mostly just a big virtual cocktail party, but with more swearing and porn.
I am not sure what working in the www field is but its sounds like something lots of people would like. You don’t HAVE to use the web at all. The first step is, when you have concerns like this, you can’t turn to the root cause of your troubles for help. That is self-defeating like having an AA meeting in a bar.
Staying away from the web is simple just like losing weight or quitting heroine:
Tell the people in your life IN PERSON that you have had it with the web and you are giving it up. Public declarations are a necessary first step.
Give all your electronic devices to charity
Stay away from libraries and places where there is free web access.
Make some like-minded friends such as the Amish and keep your days filled with other activities. Whittling, marathon running, and deep country backpacking are all good activities for staying web sober. DO NOT fall to temptation to post photos of yourself doing these things on Facebook however.
Enjoy your abundance of new found time.
I am going to quit the web too someday. I already blew the resolution this year but next year is my ticket out.
Find something new to do/look at - either online (via something like StumbleUpon or one of the social bookmarking things), or offline - you know - in the real world.
The internet is a pretty big thing to hate.
Sure, there are some which are worth animosity, but the great majority is not worthy of attention. Learn to ignore things which do not matter, do not expose yourself to petty things which you know annoy you, and get out of the house - no, I don’t care where you go, but you are wasting a perfectly nice day just sitting in front of that computer. Meet some real people.
