Actually, Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow are being developed as a single screen play even as we speak by Card. They have a stuido, and a director comitted to the project, although at the moment, I am too lazy to find a cite. Googling on “Ender’s Game movie” would probably do the trick.
I put the three movies in the subject in the same bin: overlong stinkers with wooden acting. They all relate to each other in the same way.
The Ender’s Game movie has been “in process” for at least a decade. Orson Scott Card stated a while ago on his website that it was stuck in moviemaking hell, with no real chance of getting done. Sorry. Cites or no cites, I’ll believe it when I see the trailer. See also Dwarf, Red.
ROFL. Sorry, while I agree that the Harry Potter movies are not as great as they could have been, there’s no way in hell the movie studies will ever stop churning out them out. It is a $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ machine! And studios like $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
It’s certainly a cash cow, but I wonder for how long. The kids in the movies, as well as the kids who read the books, are growing up. The long delay between the last two books may be a problem, and who knows how long it’ll take to get the others done. It’ll be tough making reasonable-length movies for kids out of a couple of 750-page books.
There was a semi-animated version of Lord of the Rings done by Ralph Bakshi a while back. He ran out of money halfway thru.
I agree LotR is not a typical Hollywood movie.
The books are pretty popular and Jackson spent a lot of time preparing his adaptation before filming. Their success suggests to me they will do the Hobbit next.
For me the main point is that Tolkien has a plot (unlike the ghastly puerile ripoff that is the Shannara series).
Lord, what a weird movie. Very trippy. Of course, strangest of all is how suddenly the ending comes - they ran out of money and cut it short about halfway through Return of the King. No climax at all!
I’m not sure “relatively unknown actors” is a completely accurate description, given Sir McKellen’s renown. Maybe “no big-ticket Hollywood stars” or “no current Hollywood heartthrobs,” though fairly large followings of several of the LOTR actors have come out of the woodwork.
Ok so I misread the O/P sorry about that…
Actually misinterpreted would be a better description… I do that a lot.
I’m waiting for an adaptation of Ursula LeGuin’s Wizard of Earthsea. I’d settle for just the first book of the series, too. Peter Jackson could make it so that it would be visually beautiful and true to the spirit of the book. I doubt it will happen though because part of the story takes place at a Wizard School™. It may be a really cool wizard school, but I believe that niche has already been filled.
Be that as it may… The best source I’ve seen for updates on the Ender’s Game movie is the Philotic Web site.
It was there, last year, that I learned that Wolfgang Petersen was slated as director. And it was there, today, that I read this very strange piece of news:
Weird. I hope it’s a joke (normally the siute is home to serious info)… if it’s not a joke, it bodes ill for the film, I think.
