TLC Tugger? Did I just see that?

Yeah, but it lacks the emotional resonance of the novel.

It was Jack Dean Tyler…but otherwise, yeah. shudder

Meh. Jack’s a nickname for John. So whatever works.

Not always. I know several people whose real names are Jack. One of them flips out when people “correct” his name to John. It’s pretty funny to see.

Do you need a handi-wipe?

So, what was there after you clicked the link?

You mean the SDMB has entered into an agreement whereby another company can put whatever they want on the SD website with no qualifications whatsoever?

Even a whore has *some * standards.

TV stations have control over what airs on their frequencies. Whay would a website be any different?

Google claims:

https://www.google.com/adsense/login/en_US/?gsessionid=xbF4sAOzH7U
click on “Show only appropriate ads” link.

Yeah, but it was his screen name, not his RL name (could have been, come to think of it, but I don’t know). So if anybody wanted to search for his posts or anything, they needed the right name. I don’t need to, I remember him all too well!

Why are you guys making a big deal out of this? So an ad comes through offering a sexual device for sale. Oh, the horror! And how could you possibly keep your finger from clicking the link and seeing a (gasp!) TUMESCENT WANG? I mean, who’d have thought you’d accidentally stumble across the photo of a penis when clicking on an add for a penis accessory?

Or is it that you caught them in an act of HORRIBLE HYPOCRISY for not following their own two-click rule? Well, way to go! With the board police firmly on guard, clicking every link and clicking it twice, I’ll sleep better tonight.

Jeez, let the board make a little money, and stop your bleemin’ griping already. Me, I’m just glad that people who are desperately pining for their lost foreskins now have an excrutiating option for trying to get them back. Even if it doesn’t work, well, it’s the journey, not the destination. Am I right?

As someone who runs google ads on my site, this is factually false. I completely understand it would be difficult at best to isolate potential offensive ads of this nature. Considering the whole premise of this board is about fighting ignorance, this is a completely unacceptable answer especially from a mod.

Too much of a PITA, fine.

We have no control, bullshit, and dozens of web saavy dopers know better.

I am not a mod, fuck-you-very-much. I just know what the administration has said previously when the subject of inappropriate ads has come up. Take it up with them.

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=7697105&postcount=5

So because the boss says so it suddenly becomes true? I know this has come up before and mods/sdsab/admin types have been called on it.

Spouting the same bullshit over and over will not make it true.

I had no reason to doubt him until now, why should I? If I checked out everything anybody tells me, I’d never get anything done. At some point, I have to decide whether or not a given person is likely to be giving me correct information; Dex has never given me any reason previously for not taking him at his word.

It’s possible, even likely, that he was in turn misinformed by someone he similarly trusted. Getting your panties in a bunch over it isn’t going to fix it.

Q.E.D., maybe if you didn’t answer every question about every topic as if you’re an authority on the subject, misunderstandings like this wouldn’t happen. You didn’t say the adminstration said they have no control over it, you unequivocally stated that the administration has no control over it.

I’ve run a vBulletin messageboard for seven years, and have used Google Adsense on several sites. And despite actually being very familiar with the topic at hand, I still qualify my answers by explaining that my experience is my own, and that I can’t speak for the SDMB if they’ve got something unusual going. Is it too much to ask that you do the same thing when your only experience on the subject is what you found with a 30 second Google search or heard someone else say?

I didn’t think I had to. Where else would I get that information?

By being a member of the administration, which people can mistakenly assume quite easily if they don’t know what SDSAB means.

There used to be a sticky in ATMB addressing just that. For some reason, they seem to have unstuck it. In any case, I’m not responsible for the assumptions of others; I’ve always corrected the error when someone, as in this case, calls me a moderator or a member of the board staff.

.
Apropos of the sidebar, is a SDSAB member considered “a member of the administration?” I sure can’t see why he would, but maybe I missed something.
.

Nope. We’re just Cecil’s typewriter monkeys. We have as much to do with running the SDMB as you do.
