tLOTR , vf - Or cruel and unusual punishment?

My SO just got off the phone with his parents, and in the course of their conversation they revealed that they’d be interested in watching The Lord Of The Rings with us when it comes out. That’s Ok in and of itself, I want to see the movie too, and I like his parents. The problem, though, is that they don’t speak much English. They want me to watch it in FRENCH!!.

Now, I do speak french, and have no trouble with following a movie in French, but seriously! Gandalf, in FRENCH!!. Frodo, in FRENCH!!. Meriadoc, in FRENCH!!. How can they do this to me!!! Elijah Wood,Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler…in FRENCH!!.

This is worse than when they wanted me to watch Finding Forester in French - imagine, Sean Connery, without that accent. Terrible, terrible terrible.

I can’t do it. I just can’t do it. My SO is telling me I’m being silly. I tell him this is just cruel! I understand their need to watch the movie in French, they wouldn’t understand it otherwise. But I have a choice of languages, and dubbed just isn’t right!

I don’t wanna! I don’t wanna! I don’t wanna…!![sub]mnemosyne’s voice fades away as she’s dragged by the hair into a French movie theatre…[/sub]

Just go see it first in English.

Christ, if I can watch Scooby Doo speaking in a Chinese dog voice, you should be able to handle hobbits in French.

Reminds me of my Dad watching John Wayne movies dubbed in Thai. It just doesn’t fit!
