I love fruit; I try to eat it with every meal. My usual daily haul:
Banana (3 grams of fiber)
Apple (4 grams)
Blueberries (3 grams per cup)
Raspberries (8 grams per cup)
Blackberries (8 grams per cup)
Apricots (3 grams per cup)
Prunes (12 grams per cup)
Orange (3 grams)
Avocado (about 6 grams)
All of those are tasty and widely available. But fresh produce isn’t cheap.
Try 1 or more servings of live-culture fermented vegetables per day. One serving is 4to 6 ounces (which is more than is listed on the container). If they have a live culture they will be sold refrigerated. If they are not in the refrigerated section, there is no live culture.
One serving a day has significantly improved my bowel movements and made me more regular. I learned of this technique on a recent Andrew Huberman episode on bowel health.
I have tried Metamucil, psyllium husks, prunes, etc. and none made any difference. Of course, in addition you should eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and other high-fiber food as well, but adding a serving of fermented vegetables is what helps me. This can be sauerkraut, pickles, or kimchi.
Pysllium didn’t work as well as I had hoped that it would. It didn’t help me feel fuller and it had only a modest impact on regularity. Nothing like being blocked AND having a lot of mass being held up by the blockage.
I don’t think psyllium makes me more regular, and i know it doesn’t reduce how much other stuff i eat. But it does reduce the incidence of my getting constipated. That is, it’s easier to poop when i do that when I’m eating psyllium. I also do it more often. (Not more regularly, it’s still pretty hit or miss when i go.)
I add blueberries and ground flax seed to my yogurt every morning which provides me with a good amount of fiber first thing in the morning. I eat fruit, mostly apples and pears, throughout the day, and I have carrots and celery along with my lunch. I eat a large salad with my dinner and usually have cruciferous veggies, which also provide some good fiber. Since doing this I have been regular as a clock as far as that goes. In my mind, the more fiber the better, but just natural fiber, no powders or chemicals.
