We just got back from a Rennaisance Faire and we enjoyed it so much. Every body who puts so much work into these festivals and the costumes-thank you! You are so cool!
My four year old, who has pretty much been wearing the helmet and breastplate grandma gave him for his birthday 4 weeks ago continuously, was in Heaven. He just loved all those guys bashing each other with swords…and the jousting!
I was in Raleigh, NC. I saw tons of people in fabulous costumes, guys juggling fire, guys jousting on horses (I know, how else do you joust, but having exactly one horse ride in my past it is amazing to me that they get the horses to consent to it), my little knight in armor dancing around a maypole, just all kinds of fun and wonderful things.
I’m too lazy and too shy to make and wear costumes, so I really admire the folks who do.
The best one that I’ve been to was in Maryland. Perfect setting and lots of things to do including plays, ren-style commediennes, etc. And the craft booths were fantastic!
The Ren Festival here (not in Maryland) is held at a friend’s house. They built and live in a castle.
I know there’s a whole bunch of SCA people (I think they like to be called SCAdians) on the SDMB. Personally, I don’t get into the SCA stuff, although I think it’s kinda cool. I’m just a Rennie.
Last summer we took one of my daughter’s friends to the Bristol Renaissance Faire with us. My daughter begged me not to go in garb, as she wasn’t sure what her friend would make of that whole thing (13 is just a weird age…) We got to the gates of the Faire, the friend looked around wide-eyed and turned to me and asked, “Why don’t you guys wear those cool costumes? I would!”
I love the music best. Incidentally, I’m surprised at how much real history I have learned since I got into the Ren Faire…you hear something here, see something there, and next thing you know, you’re in the library finding out more.
