The only problem is I don’t know where to go to be one or for that matter how to be one. I would like to be knowledgeable on all the hip and new artistitic trends but all of the old traditional places to do so seem unreasonably expensive to support this type of carefree lifestyle.
So without further adieu, please share your Bohemian locales and experiences.
It was a brief and shining moment – then I realized I’m not cut out to be hip and, having come to terms with that sad epiphany, I’ve been working for a living ever since.
Sigh, I guess my where is really when. Where in SoCA was the Bohemian place in the mid 70s? I was thinking SF was the place to be then but I actually am not sure if it is considered SoCA.
I guess if you want bohemian on the cheap you’d have to go to a college town in the hinterlands. Austin, TX,; Ames, Iowa; Athens, GA, that sort of thing.
I lived my post-college bohemian (well, maybe not exactly bohemian, but definitely bookish, artsy, and carefree) existence in and around Boulder, CO in the 80’s. Some good coffee joints and good used bookstores pre-Starbucks and B&N. Lots of friends around who just couldn’t leave town. You could get a cabin in the foothills or a decent room in a decent house for <$200 a month. I started getting stagnant after a couple of years (or my stagnation was becoming further entrenched), though, and had to move on. It’s pretty expensive out there now.
im in portland oregon…home to would-be college intellectuals and dirty hippies. dont believe anyone that tells you portland is the land of the bohemian…its a load of hoo-ha
wanna be somewhere bohemian?
try morocco or spain.
San Francisco is indeed The Place to Be, but it is very not SoCA. The Bay Area is an entity unto itself. Don’t let anyone from either LA or San Francisco hear you call SF “SoCal”.
