I’ve heard some argue that the most wear and tear is done when the set is cut on and off ( and that applies to computer monitors). Does anyone know for sure?
Do the same rules apply to projection TVs? I’ve heard that the more you leave a projection TV on the liquid that cools the color guns becomes dark which degrades the picture quality.
Well if you want an opinion, at least as far as CRTs are concerned, the electron guns in back of the set use filaments, much like the filaments in a lightbulb. Turning the set on or off causes a wide temerature swing which might strain the filament (this is proably also why light bulbs usually burn out when they’re turned on instead of when they’re already runing). Additionally, there is something about the transformers of fluorescent lamps so that turning them on and off causes stress, but I cannot say for sure if that also applies to the HV transformer on a picture tube.
Of course I may be all wet.
As for projection TVs, being totally unfamiliar with them I won’t even hazard a guess, sorry.
The cable man told my stepfather that turning the TV off is bad for it, so he just turns the cable box off when he is done watching TV (or at least, he did when I lived with him). This seemed very very stupid to me, to leave the Television on 24 hours a day.
I told my stepfather this, he said it is what the cable man told him to do. I didn’t particularly care because I didn’t watch much TV and was about to move out shortly, but it bothered me he was probably going to ruin a brand new $300 TV.
After a couple months it developed extreeeme color bleeding and other malfunctions that I assume are problems caused by being left on 24 hours a day, all year. Sometimes turning the TV off for a while giving it a rest helped, other times it doesn’t.
Like fluorescant light bulbs, you have to use common sense: “Am I going to be turning this on again so soon that the electrical wear and tear will be worse than just leaving it on?”
i am not sure about CRT glass tubes, but I know that you should not leave a rear projection tv on for longer than you are watching it. so turning it off when you are done is a good idea.
A regular Tv will last a bit longer if left on. The constant surging of power on and of when you turn it on and off can over time kill it…dont beleive me go turn your tv on and off 100 times a day for a week and it will die. Seen it done first hand (I used to repair TV’s for a furniture/appliance store).
Ok as far as projection tv’s…Leave one on for ever and you are gonna get burn in on the screen. That is due to tv logos in the same spot and if you were to leave a game playing on there the score and the word pause would burn in.
Thank you.
CRTs have heater elements in the base to improve the emission from the guns.
When you leave such a tv on standby, that heater emains on, and that means it will turn on much faster when you want to use it.
When the heater cools, it takes time to warm up the guns hence the longer time for a picture to appear even though the sound os coming through loud and clear.
Unless you are turning the tv set on and off very many times a day, several dozen, leaving the tv on standby will reduce the life of the heater and hence the tube.
However, modern tv sets are extremely reliable indeed and relativly cheap too, so it reall depned upon wether that first few seconds of picture are that important to you when you turn on your set from cold.
Complete shut down will save a little bit of power, all helps the environment.
