To the members of SDMB: Another one bites the dust. Are you next?

uh, erm, is that on video?

What a jerk!!

This is a better analogy, and a more accurate one.

You have a house. You have carpet. In your carpeted house, you sell a product that you would like others to purchase. You invite people over to your house, and hope that they will purchase your products, or at least that you’ll get some mindshare with the general public. You enter your house with muddy feet, burping and scratching as you please. Your guests notice this, and act the same way. You immediately have a fit and banish them from ever returning. You’re a bad host, whether or not it’s your house.

I’ve only got one beef with the situation. On page three of the ATMB thread, Tuba Diva says:

Maybe we can get a posting of all these “unofficial” rules so they’re written down somewhere and we can follow them in the future. It’s been my experience that any “unofficial” rule is NOT a rule at all and therefore need not be adhered to.

Not long ago there was a minor debate about unofficial rules in sports after a batter had bunted for a single to break up a no-hitter. Some people thought it was a shitty thing to do and berated the batter for cheap tactics by breaking the unofficial rule of not bunting in the late innings of a no-hitter. But guess what, that hit counts in the rule book because not bunting in a no-hitter is not an official rule. The batter was not called out or tossed from the game for breaking an unofficial rule.

Can’t any Pit thread where a poster disagrees with a mod be construed as screwing with the mod? What is the definition for screwing with a mod? Am I screwing with TubaDiva for posting this?

I’m not arguing with the banishment. I never really knew Silo and I don’t know all the reasons for the banning. It did seem a minor infraction to me, but he has a shady history here and it’s not my call. But can we please keep reasons for banning on an “official” level?

If we are to treat the mods as infallable from now on, then please, make it official.

You own a house. The house has white carpet. You fart, burp and sneeze while you’re in the house by yourself. Eventually you invite friends over so you stop farting, burping and sneezing. But then you start drinking and you can’t hold it in so you fart. Hilarity ensues. Someone suggests you start lighting them off which you do and it sets the coffee table on fire. You put out the fire with a bottle of Mountain Dew. Someone walks into the house with muddy shoes but the house is such a mess by this time that you don’t really care. The TV set is on, but all that’s showing is a Full House marathon. So you decide to go to the video store to rent some porn but since it’s the holiday weekend all that’s available is some old cheaply made film when the participants bear a disturbing resemblence to Marcia Wallace and Tom Poston. So you wander down to the only bar in town that’s open on the Fourth of July and drown your sorrows in continual rounds of rum and cokes. They’re showing “Wuthering Heights” on the TV above the bar. Heathcliff does not return.

I think you can clearly see what I’m getting at here.

Euty, that was the best fucking analogy I’ve ever seen posted anyway on the SDMB. That just made my day.

ponders Euty’s post for an extended period of time Damn, that’s too long for a sig, isn’t it.

And we see again why Euty rocks the free world. And is a Nazi. He’s just that cool.

So let me see if I understand all of this. After reading all 6 pages, I may be a little hazy on the details, but please bear with me:

Silo used to be a prick, which pretty much everyone seems to agree on. Then after a run-in with the mods, he got back on and was pretty much on good behavior for 18 months.

Think about that for a second: 18 months. It’s longer than many people have even been here. And you would think that 18 months of trouble-free posting would count for something, but Silo has apparently been banned for something that the vast majority of posters would have simply received a warning for.

Do I think he was right in doing it? No. But would the board have been better served if he hadn’t posted it at all, keeping it on IRC or passing it along to his friends? Hell no. If he’d done the latter, I’m fairly sure no one would have a problem with him being banned, as that would be a pretty damned low thing to do. But he posted it on the board, and (sort of) apologized for it. Not the greatest apology I’ve ever seen, but then I’ve seen similar apologies save the posting privileges of a few people.

Now we move on to the mods…and no, they’re not under any obligation to be fair. They’re not under any obligation to do anything. But I don’t think it’d be too hard for them to live under the same rules as we do. After all, they’re not the ones banning people, the admins are. And if a certain moderator is repeatedly violating the “don’t be a jerk” rule, then I’m sure there are a few qualified posters around here who wouldn’t mind replacing him.

This post will, of course, not change anything, and I’d be delusional if I thought it would. And maybe it’s better that way, because running this board based on the opinions of it’s posters would be a truly dumb way of doing things. But I am thankful that the SDMB would even allow me to post something like this, whereas I can think of about a million boards out there that would ban me at the drop of a hat for it. That being said, I think the moderators have overreacted just a bit here.

Been there, done that, even stuck my ass out for a moderator on this board when I was a moderator for another board…partly for which I have since resigned my duties and have not returned, although I would like to. Different tale.

Anyhow, I have seen what it’s like behind the scenes and I have fought my battles for and against people. I hate to say this, but yes, it’s a very difficult thing to go against your fellow mods. It SUCKS big time but from what I saw, Silo didn’t deserve the big old boot and Mr. Manny (despite his public apology, with which Silo can’t comment on here, in the appropriate place) was very rude to him. He put on the Moderator airs but we all know he felt otherwise until Silo responded. Silo can’t come back here and apologize, state his side of the story but Manny can go on like nothing happened. Had I been Silo, given the circumstances, I probably would have reacted in a very non-chalant way as well…Manny was rude, he can rectify that, Silo can’t, pretty much bullshit in my eyes.

I told Mike my last response was the last one I did on page two, but after seeing that, I had to respond. I pretty much made my life miserable (well I do a good job of it in other ways) for one of the moderators on this board where his posting style was in question on another board. I spent hours going through posts to show that he was not the bad guy the other mods said he was…to no avail. I guess that if some twit feels he/she is hurt by one he/she needs to go overboard with the ideal of getting the person to leave or banned…I have been there, done that, and stuck my ass out in the wind for one of your damn moderators here.

BTW, I can talk about it now since I have absolutely no ties to any board but my own. But the point is, it should take a lot more than this to ban a person. For that I am saddened, despite a lot of the people that ^5 the decision based on one incident and not a year and a half of Mike’s contributions to this message board. One fuck up and we all need to be concerned that our asses will be tied to the stake and burned because a moderator or admin doesn’t agree with our response.

Sorry, if you don’t like what I have to say, life happens, if the SDMB mods and admins are voluntary professionals, then show it damnit, the professional part. I don’t give them A+s for their work, they do it voluntarily, so what, a thankless job, many here have thankless jobs and don’t get paid or don’t get paid enough for their work. If their work is so God-Damned valuable then start paying them for it. But in either case, I find the ruling to ban Silo wrong, wrong, wrong as I have seen worse infractions on here and other message boards.

Done, time to switch the CD. Have fun you all, enjoy…

Duh. Wimbledon is in England. Beer is appropriate for Kindergarten lunch over there!

Go Goran! What a surprise. The headline on (I think) the Daily Mirror this morning was “The G-Spot”. Snicker, snort, guffaw. You gotta love Fleet Street.

[Teeny tiny minor nitpick]
The Mirror, along with most of the other major papers nowadays, is nolonger produced in Fleet Street but in Canary Warf.
[/Teeny tiny minor nitpick]

That said… Go Henman! We all know he’s horribly doomed to disappoint us all again in the face of Goran’s Killer Serve From Hell, but let’s at least pretend for a while we have a chance.

Fran

To be frank, I wouldn’t mind dolloping a little home-made cream on her strawberries. Matron.

But you know, I also get the strong impression Anna is a teeny weeny bit of a stuck up bitch. Which is not entirely a bad thing if you like your service game to have , occasionally, a particularly assertive edge.

Myrr, my dear - beer is appropriate on yer cornflakes. However, at Wimbledon, good form is to raise your little finger while necking the amber.

And no peeing in the straw hats, cos the queue for the loo is too long - the stain’s a bugger to get off the flanels.

I think you’re teaching your mother to suck eggs, here, Fran.
Today is going to be a stuggle. Wimbers or The Ashes, Wimbers or The Ashes…God, I love the summer !!

Just wish I could work out how to assemble this damn Chinese made fan…

Having read the first two pages of this thread, and got bored, I then went onto the last page hopng to find some bon mot* to wrap this affair up…

…imagine my surprise to find some discussion about Tim (I’m almost good enough to win something or maybe get near to a final) Henman.

This is most surreal!!

Unless Silo…Henman ??

Surely not.

This is the most beautiful hijack ever in the history of this board. Thank you Wimbledon for providing us with this glorious reprieve.

[sub]sorry, silo, but you know no good can come from the sniping in here[/sub]

Okay, folks. As many of you know, once a thread begins to get past five pages, it gets a little wonky. The server does weird stuff in pulling it up, replies get more time-out errors than they normally would, etc.

So I’m closing this one down, and starting a continuation thread. It’s located right here if you’d like to keep disucssing the issue. Or tennis. Either one, I don’t care.

Though I do expect to get called a Nazi for shutting down discussion here. Cripes, I think I’m the only mod who hasn’t been called a Nazi.
