Okay, I’m a newbie. Perhaps that’s automatic grounds for dismissal in this particular thread. I’ve read this thread, and I must admit it has been educational. I don’t know about Silo’s past as a troll or whatever, and I’m enough of a technophobe/technoidiot to really be unable to appreciate/use/abuse whatever information that Silo in bad judgement posted to the board. I haven’t read enough of Silo’s posts to care either way about what spice or not he did lend to the board. There most likely will be new, more colorful people to replace him here. As far as I’m concerned he can take his uniqueness to another board, and if you want to share in it while waiting for this slow board to bring up a thread, go visit him there. He’s not been drawn and quartered. He’s very much alive. This is not the tragedy you’re making it out to be.
I will say this. I understand administration. Hell, I learn more and more about it every damn day. I get paid to do it IRL, and the two things about administration, knowing full well that it’s FAR from perfect, I have to support are that:
1.) In the chain of command, the folks at the top have and must consider all the facts before rendering a final judgment. All us underlings can do is speculate about the minutiae of the administration’s decision to ban Silo, but we won’t really ever know unless the mods tell us, and I don’t really see any reason why they should.
2.) You try to work with folks as much as possible, but if and when the overall integrity of the program you administrate is threatened, you take action and if necessary have the threat removed. This may seem drastic or unfair to some, but hey, that’s life. Get over it.
I imagine that there’s plenty of admin stuff the mods have not and will not post because it’s none of our damn business because we are not mods. I would like to believe that the decision to ban Silo was not made solely by one moderator, but was the result of a majority or unanimous rule. And I imagine that the decision to do so was not easy because if what y’all say about Silo being given chances to redeem himself is true, the mods really have bent over backwards trying to work with him.
As far as some folks’ concerns that any one of us could be struck down at any moment for any infraction of the rules, wherever they might be posted, I think that’s total bullshit. If the mods, and granted I have not felt their wrath, are such awful, power-tripping people, then they would have closed this thread, rather than letting folks hash out their grievances with them FOR DOING THEIR JOB AS THEY SEE FIT. We are free to speak here and to pose questions, and we know or should know that if we have questions/concerns, we can and should ask the moderators through email. If I ever make a mistake bad enough to warrant banning from this board/community, so be it. I’ll live with it. I’ve lived without the SDMB for most of my life. I value the connections I’ve made with folks here, and I look forward to making more, but I have to agree with strofsky on this. If the SDMB were to shut down tomorrow, I’d mourn its loss, but my life will go on. I’d try to keep in touch with the friends I’ve made thus far, but hey there are plenty of people and plenty of opportunities for establishing meaningful relationships and for learning IRL and in other electronic fora. As much fun as I have playing around on this board, it still can’t hold a candle to the kinds of interactions I have IRL because it can’t compensate for real life. I know this is the PIT, but that last remark really isn’t intended as an insult to the people who post here or to the larger goals of the board to eradicate ignorance. It’s just the truth as I see it.
Come on, people. Silo’s not completely lost to this board or to you. If he’s as well liked as you say he is, then maintain contact with him through other means and stop making him come off as some fucking martyr for a what IMHO is a non-existent cause.
