To the members of SDMB: Another one bites the dust. Are you next?

I suppose this thing has been covered as well as possible by the rest of ya’ll, so I’ll just say this:

Two certain mods, let’s call them Mnhttn and Tb*, can suck my Pinko dick. Yes, they can kiss my Commie ass and felch my dead panda.

And people think CHINA is an oppressive society that punishes people for thought crimes?? Try the SDMB on for size!

— G. Raven

True. Murdering hundreds of thousands of it’s own people, destroying several thousand years of art and culture, these are nothing compared to the banning of one person from a message board.

He didn’t mention “Nazis” but can Godwin’s Law be invoked here? It’s the same principle.

Fenris

HA!

The moderators of this board are frellin’ bleeding-heart liberals compared to other boards I’ve seen. I accept their judgements, even when I disagree with them, wholeheartedly and unabashedly, 'cause I’ve seen what other tyrannical moderators and administrators do on other boards (all in the name of “fair play” and “not hurting anyone’s feelings”). Give me some locked threads, a little bad-mouthing and The Pit any day over what some of these other message boards demand of their posters.

Wow, Silo has become quite the martyr for the uh…what cause is it exactly?

I’d also be inteersted to know who this was, and if HE was banned. 'Cause Silo didn’t post any actual workaround for anyone to see OR use.

— G. Raven

Yes, if that’s the law that dictates that the first reply to any given joke shall completely miss the point of the humour contained within the analogy.

— G. Raevn

Ohhhh…I get it now!

Wait, no I don’t.

The difference between silo and the several other people who figured it out is Silo posted about it, and the others did not.

Pretty simple, eh?

Y’all know what I find highly amusing and ironic? It’s when Unclebeer posted this:

… Forgetting that we CAN’T do those searches UNLESS we follow the technique that Silo described!

So is Unclebeer now going to be banned for “encouraging others to screw up the workings of the board”? I sure hope not… we Gun Nuts need to stick together…

SPOOFE, you can now search up to 2 years back in any given forum.

No, search now goes back 2 years. All the Masterson crap was March 2000 or so. And that one thread was recently bumped to the top (and those of you claiming that Silo never intended to use the workaround he mentioned, explain how he did that without it).

Good point. The last time someone did that to manhattan, he responded with

So I guess Silo should be happy he was only banned.

Oh, is this the syndrome where someone who finds themself in an untenable position claims to have been just joking? I seem to be running into that a lot lately.

It isn’t particularly funny.

Silo was a jerk. Posting the hack was stupid. Not apologizing immediately when called on it was stupid and rude. trying to pass off the offense as insignificant, in a thread where many people had testified to the significance they placed on the functions in question, was simply idiotic. Being rude to one’s hosts after they have made exceptional efforts to allow you into their party, and after you have promised to be on your best behavior, is Darwinian. Sorry, Charlie, this gene pool is stagnant.

Apparently your understanding of the Internet matches your grasp of humor. Silo posted clear instruction for a backdoor around search restriction implemented by SDMB staff. He also stated quite plainly that he saw no problem with the “select few” circumventing the wishes of the administrators.

Kind souls that they are, the mods didn’t even ban him after that. It took yet a third error in judgment for him to meet his doom. This time.

Can you feel the love?

I remember once that Manhatten called someone a Mean-Spirited Boogerbrain…

or was he Telling someone not to call someone else a mean-spirited boogerbrain… either way, I laughed…

*<quoth Silo>

I wish to apologize for my posts which gave information on how to circumvent some of the limitations the Chicago Reader has chosen, for its own reasons, to place on the operation of the SDMB. I realize that my posting the information was wrong, not only because having people follow the instructions could lead to more work for you, but also because I had claimed to have matured beyond the point where I would need to be validated by such “showing off”.

I am truly sorry for the actions I took, and I hope you will forgive me for my lapse in judgement, and remove the posts with the offending information.*

I haven’t read past half of the first page of this thread, yet, and I know that this post would have saved Silo his posting privileges.

then why the Hell don’t I know what the Hell he was talking about?

Oh, PHEW!! That’s a relief. That means ol’ Unc isn’t getting banned, after all.

Okay, I’m a newbie. Perhaps that’s automatic grounds for dismissal in this particular thread. I’ve read this thread, and I must admit it has been educational. I don’t know about Silo’s past as a troll or whatever, and I’m enough of a technophobe/technoidiot to really be unable to appreciate/use/abuse whatever information that Silo in bad judgement posted to the board. I haven’t read enough of Silo’s posts to care either way about what spice or not he did lend to the board. There most likely will be new, more colorful people to replace him here. As far as I’m concerned he can take his uniqueness to another board, and if you want to share in it while waiting for this slow board to bring up a thread, go visit him there. He’s not been drawn and quartered. He’s very much alive. This is not the tragedy you’re making it out to be.

I will say this. I understand administration. Hell, I learn more and more about it every damn day. I get paid to do it IRL, and the two things about administration, knowing full well that it’s FAR from perfect, I have to support are that:
1.) In the chain of command, the folks at the top have and must consider all the facts before rendering a final judgment. All us underlings can do is speculate about the minutiae of the administration’s decision to ban Silo, but we won’t really ever know unless the mods tell us, and I don’t really see any reason why they should.
2.) You try to work with folks as much as possible, but if and when the overall integrity of the program you administrate is threatened, you take action and if necessary have the threat removed. This may seem drastic or unfair to some, but hey, that’s life. Get over it.

I imagine that there’s plenty of admin stuff the mods have not and will not post because it’s none of our damn business because we are not mods. I would like to believe that the decision to ban Silo was not made solely by one moderator, but was the result of a majority or unanimous rule. And I imagine that the decision to do so was not easy because if what y’all say about Silo being given chances to redeem himself is true, the mods really have bent over backwards trying to work with him.

As far as some folks’ concerns that any one of us could be struck down at any moment for any infraction of the rules, wherever they might be posted, I think that’s total bullshit. If the mods, and granted I have not felt their wrath, are such awful, power-tripping people, then they would have closed this thread, rather than letting folks hash out their grievances with them FOR DOING THEIR JOB AS THEY SEE FIT. We are free to speak here and to pose questions, and we know or should know that if we have questions/concerns, we can and should ask the moderators through email. If I ever make a mistake bad enough to warrant banning from this board/community, so be it. I’ll live with it. I’ve lived without the SDMB for most of my life. I value the connections I’ve made with folks here, and I look forward to making more, but I have to agree with strofsky on this. If the SDMB were to shut down tomorrow, I’d mourn its loss, but my life will go on. I’d try to keep in touch with the friends I’ve made thus far, but hey there are plenty of people and plenty of opportunities for establishing meaningful relationships and for learning IRL and in other electronic fora. As much fun as I have playing around on this board, it still can’t hold a candle to the kinds of interactions I have IRL because it can’t compensate for real life. I know this is the PIT, but that last remark really isn’t intended as an insult to the people who post here or to the larger goals of the board to eradicate ignorance. It’s just the truth as I see it.

Come on, people. Silo’s not completely lost to this board or to you. If he’s as well liked as you say he is, then maintain contact with him through other means and stop making him come off as some fucking martyr for a what IMHO is a non-existent cause.

This is bullshit…you all sat there for how freaking long, stating that MM was the biggest ass, he apologized and came back as Silo. Many hated him, many deplored him, many thought he was funny and a couple of us stuck behind him and he proved to be a great poster and a good friend to many. Bringing up his past from a year and a half ago is just fucked.

He was NOT Yaman runner or whatever the fuck that name was, that was your friend and foe, CONCRETE…false accusations don’t sit well with me…that’s fuck up.

Mike is a good friend of mine, he posted stuff that very few could understand, even yours truly. It would take me a while to figure it out, but I could. But shit…to give someone shit and ban them for giving out information that could be public knowledge, that’s pretty screwed up in my eyes.

If a message board wants to secure a means by which to by-pass the system then the message board operators need to plug the holes and be as secure as it can.

A warning I can see, but this out and out banning for explaining a hole your damn system (whether or not it’s my friend) is bullshit.

I dig many of you mods (some I don’t interact with) I dig the admins as well, but this is way off the charts and makes me ill to my stomach.

This pisses me off. Thank you Silo for alerting me to this as I have been a little disjointed as it is when reading threads…this has been an enlightening experience of how the SDMB handles very minor situations…yes minor. To bring up his past to ban him for this is just an outrageous ordeal that will not set well for me for time to come.

In short, I am asking that the SDMB admins/mods get off their thrones and allow Silo back with apologetic arms. He didn’t create the problem, it was your software that you purchased. He pointed it out, you can fix it…to out and out ban for this type of “infraction” is ludicrious at best.

And yet, people have stated that they have no fucking clue what he was talking about. As of right now I (though I admit I haven’t opened an IMHO thread to take a poll) know of exactly FOUR (and possibly five) people who understood, and one of them knew before Silo posted (Fierra). Another is Silo. And I have it on good authority the other two aren’t about to do anything about said “clear instructions”. I could make inferences about various comments made here, but that isn’t really going to do anyone much good, now, is it?

Should he have posted this information? No. But it’s not like when Kyber posted code for pinging the SDMB server (which I think could be altered to ping more or less frequently, but as I never saw the code I can’t say for sure). Silo didn’t outright say “Here you are . . . you change this number . . . and you know what? I’ll open an MPSIMS thread and give out in excruciating detail how exactly to mess with the URL coding so you can search the entire board back to 1876, even the archived sections nobody ever reads.” And it strikes me as odd that, while he was banned for his posts in that thread, none of them has been deleted or altered in any way as of 1:39 AM EST, though search functions have been fully re-established, so that’s perhaps the reasoning there.

Now, at the risk of getting warned myself, I’m not about to repost Silo’s “clear instructions”, but if you read the thread cited in the OP they’re about as clear as mud unless you know exactly what he means.

And a lot of people here don’t.
