To the U.S. Navy - the USS John P. Murtha is going way too far.

This rant is beyond the pale. To the OP: who the hell cares what it’s named? Are you performing service on this ship? Are they protecting you? Shut the fuck up until you sign up.

If we banned all beyond-the-pale rants, what would happen to the SDMB?
85% of the threads would be gone.
I wouldn’t be able to post.

Peruvian navy ships (at least the important ones) are named after the biggest navy heroes, one each for the greatest army and air force heroes, and then ports and battles. The heroes, except for Quiñones (KIA 1941) are either from the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) or the independence (1820-1824), so there is little problem with that.
Of course, with a navy as large as the USNavy, you can run out of names quickly.

There is a USS Jimmy Carter (SSN23) so Clinton and Obama should be shoo-ins.

This is an extremely nice piece of sarcasm, very nice, with the play on the Schmidt/Murtha flap.

Wait . . . you do know that the OP is a Navy veteran, don’t you?

You… do know that Jimmy Carter was a submarine sailor? And trained as a nuke?

Murtha is a Democrat! A DEMOCRAT!!!@!!@@!

To some, the combination is unforgivable.

Well, the first rule of MarineClub is that you don’t talk about MarineClub.

Unless I missed something, I did pay for it.
