I was watching this sort of nature/science call-in show hosted by this woman who has various guests on, for which people can call in and ask questions. Okay, it’s this afternoon show on TVO called “Day Break” (I think). And I really cannot stand the host.
Anyway, the guest pulls out a periscope made by a student…you know, a sloppy looking thing made out of a milk carton, two holes cut in it and the mirrors. The wonderful host proceeds to ooooh and aaahh…
“ooooh, look at that! Hmmm, this is neat. Ohh, I get it, so I look in here…hey, I can see the camera man! Isn’t this neat!”
I wanted to slap her. Ya, she’s a girl, I know that’s wrong and all, but I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Firstly, how can she not know what a periscope is??? Who hasn’t made one of these as a child? Has she never seen a submarine movie before???
But that was only the beginning. Notice the camera man comment? Yes, that’s right, she was using it UPSIDE DOWN!!
I was not amused. This deserves mention in the “it scares me that people don’t these things” thread.
Aren’t TV presenters supposed to be professionally wide-eyed and stupid in order to demonstrate the story to viewers with the mental age of 5 (and also to children)?
I hear that mainstream TV in America is geared towards an 8th-grade level of comprehension. Factor in the exchange rate, and you get what, 5th grade+summer school in Canada?
She was looking in the “top” mirror. I mean, ya, the thing still works, but in the hell uses a periscope like that??
And what happened to all the other posts that where in this thiread? There were 15 yesterday.
For what it’s worth, several people, including building inspectors, foresters {root evaluation) and anyone who needs to look in confined spaces that are below them. These “periscopes” are usually fiberoptic tubes (and thus not really periscopes), but they used true periscopes before fiberoptic technology came along.

You posted the OP twice. There are two of these threads; the other has probably fallen to the second page.
