To what religion would I turn to find "free" ritualistic sex?

I’m thinking of that scene in “Eye’s Wide Shut” where everyone seemed to be getting it on in the name of religion. Don’t say Wiccan, or even Satanism because according to my American Religion professor (who did her PhD thesis on so called modern religious movements) these groups do not practice ritualistic sex.

Satanism is a very individual-oriented religion, so it’s a little hard to make sweeping statements about it. You’re right that there’s no general mandate for ritual sex, but a small group might decide to do it anyway.

Depends on the variety of Wiccan, as well, and if you add non-Wiccan neopagans into the mix, you have a wider variety of possibilities. There IS the option for a literal meaning of the hieros gamos or sacred marriage in Wiccan ritual. And many a coven observes Beltane the old-fashioned way.

The easiest way is to start your own. Can I join?

If you’re willing to include cults, Raelians are a good candidate.

One of their practices is “sensual meditation”. From what I gather, at first it merely involves exploring your own body, but as you progress, it may involve situations that some might describe as orgies. It’s hard to tell, though, as they’re a secretive bunch. However, considering the amount of media attention they have received, some French and Canadian reporters have infiltrated their ranks and, if they’re to be believed, some group sex is involved.

There’s Subud, which a (female) friend of my girlfriend belongs to, more or less (she also attends a Unitarian Universalist congregation; go figure!)

It started in Indonesia, and has a very small hippie-ish crunchy granola following in most major cities it seems. I just found out about it via her. There was a whole religion I’d never even heard of… this world is just full of surprises.

Female members are supposed to be “opened” (no kidding, this is what they call it ) by male (I believe) members (no pun intended)… and sex is one way to “get opened.” She insists that she was “opened” via another method, but she’s OK with the premise of that one as best as I can determine.

Do I need to state the religion was founded by a guy?

My acquaintance with the practice of the religion has been hampered somewhat by laughing too much when she describes it for her to continue. If you can find a local chapter and keep a straight face longer than I can, maybe you’ll be in for some Holy Nookie. Keep us posted…

:dubious:

I don’t know who that professor talked to, but there most certainly ARE neo-Pagans who are into “group sex” or ritual sex. I wouldn’t call it a common phenomena, but they aren’t entirely hidden either

However, you typically *don’t * just walk up, say “hey, I want to join”, get issued your membership card and magic beanie, then proceed directly to the love nest. There’s usually a … call it a probationary period before you get to that level. It’s not unsual for them to require STD testing (and would you want to engage in group sex with people who don’t check this out?) One group, the Church of All Worlds (which doesn’t specifically promote group sex, but does permit it, along with polyamoury) was promoting something called “condom contracts” back in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s (and maybe still are, for all I know) which would detail who you had sex with covered and who you could do bareback. In other words, there are some rules here - it’s NOT a sexual free-for-all. At least no in the groups I’ve had any contact with (no, not as a member - I used to attend Pagan gatherings where’d I’d meet folks from a variety of traditions)

But don’t assume every member of Church of All Worlds is a polyamourist orgy-attender. They also recognize celebacy as a valid spiritual practice, and some members do take that route as well.

As already mentioned, there are Wiccan covens who celebrate Beltane the “old-fashioned way”, but that only comes once a year. In some cases, your partner is picked for you - and keep in mind that gorgeous, lush, young nubile females are a minority in Pagandom. Your part in the ritual may involve a 70 year old woman with few teeth, sagging bits, stretch marks, and various scars.

Keep in mind, these Pagan groups do not want people showing up for just the sex - the ones I’ve met take the religion part of the whole thing very seriously. They don’t advertise, and they accept new members with caution.

Yes, there are a few scam artists out there, too. If ALL your interested in is sex you might find those folks a little easier - but some of the consequences of dealing with those folks can involve legal problems and complications, as well as some health risks.

What it comes down to is that what you see in the movies frequently has little connection to real life. Yes, there is ritual sex out there - but the reality is different than the Hollywood (or Kubrick) versions.

Well, I’ll look for the Paganist church where all the females look like Nicole Kidman and all the males look like Tom Cruise (or me - same thing!).

You could become a member of the Unification church, get married to a randomly-picked woman in one of their mass weddings, and then perform the religious rituals (involving some sort of a washcloth, I believe) on the first few nights. That would technically fulfill all of your requirements: free, ritualistic, and sex, although it’s probably not what you were thinking of.

When we get to the Diamond Age, you can become a Drummer.

With about half the island on trial, there just might be some real estate opening up, too.
