How and why did the tradition of putting a wooden Indian in front of a tobacco shop get started? Where do the tobacco shops buy their wooden Indians?

It would seem to me that it has to do with the big pipe the wooden indian is smoking and the fact that the indians are the people that introduced tobacco smoking to the rest of the world.
