Boy those southern Senators opposing the bailout are REALLY pissing me off. Yeah, you have foreign car companies in your state, so you want to screw over the mid west’s economy to give your own state an advantage? Do we still have a tobacco subsidy? Well fuck you, let’s get rid of that and the textile tarrifs/quotas that help the southern states and see how you like it.
You’re pissed off because a Senator is voting the interests of his or her state over the interests of another state? Isn’t that what they’re supposed to do?
I expect Senators to be Americans first, partisan hacks second. It’s also the irony that there are protections in place to keep the south competitive and yet the southern Senators are not willing to help keep American businesses based in another state alive.
The workers that work in the southern Toyota factories probably feel like they are Americans too, they might also have an issue with handing a bunch of their tax money over to the competition. I must say I agree with them and glad that their voices are also heard in the senate.
Right. You’re making the assumption that supporting the bailout is good for “America”…not good for Ford, not good for Michigan, not good for the UAW, but good for “America”, and opposing it is bad for America.
It is, in my opinon. I can see that there are opposing views, and I am somewhat conflicted myself, but it is disturbing when the most vocal Sentators have such a vested interest.
But if we are going to let the domestic auto industry fail by not subsidizing it, let’s be fair and cut tarrifs on sugar, textiles, and ethanol; stop supporting farmers; and all the other crap that is going on. I just get tired of conservatives areas of the country feeding at the trough then acting indignant when the rest of the country occasionally needs help.
I think you need to clarify your research a bit.
After all, most sugar beets come from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan - these are hardly the most conservative states in the Union. The same can be said about Hawaii - a major cane producer.
And tobacco has been demonized to a ludicrous degree. I don’t smoke, but the anti-tobacco forces are little more than modern-day teetotalers trying to make sure no one can enjoy one.
Mainly because for all their efforts, tobbacco has not really gone away like it was projected to. Given the economic problems, a cash strapped state might decide to eaze restrictions on indoor smoking, and shake loose money on alcohol sales in bars.
As soon as one does, it will be only a matter of time before others do so as well.
They need to keep up with the demonizing to delay that situation.
Declan
Yeah, but it’s grown in the conservative parts of those states.
I feel the same way about asbestos and lead based paint.
