Today I ate pancake syrup that expired 06/08/10

It had been in the fridge

am I going to die

Yes you are going to die. I don’t think the syrup has anything to do with it though.

It doesn’t “expire” as in turn poisonous or anything on the day in question. It’s still edible. It just might lose some degree of flavour by that date, and this is why stores make sure they sell it well in advance of the date in question.

No. But you are now Canadian.

No, but next time you may want to try having it with pancakes.

I eat expired food all the time and I’m not dead yet.

Of course, things that go bad, like milk or meat, is another matter. I do buy meat that’s been reduced for quick sale all the time but I take it home and either eat it that day or freeze it for later use.

Oh, and does everyone put their syrup in the refrigerator? I never have.

I agree. You’re going to die. Also, you’re not cool.

I put syrup in the fridge but apparently I am weird in that because I went to someone else’s house and he had it just in the cabinet. But I don’t like it like that for it is too runny.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of anyone doing that. I’d think it would cool off my pancakes too much.

The pancakes are so hot coming off the griddle that the syrup doesn’t cool them down too much. When I eat syrup at room temperature, it is too runny and too much comes out

I store mine indiscriminately. Cupboard or fridge; I don’t care.

Always put syrup in the fridge - supposedly stays fresher, and in our case here in Las Vegas, keep ants away from any drops that may be clinging to the bottle.

My SO is a fanatic about expiration dates - if it says it expires at 11:06 on this date, he will toss it at 11:05. This goes for dry packs of pudding, baking soda, whatever. I have tried to tell him it doesn’t turn into poison, but to no avail.

Speaking of which - I wonder if there is an expiration date on poison? Will rats suddenly look at that package, read the date and spread the word, “Hey, we can eat those rat poison pellets now - it expired at 11:07!”

“Use it or lose it” steak is actually more tender than what they usually sell; most supermarkets are too cheap to age their beef any more, and sell rigor mortis steaks that are like rubber.

Before we can answer your question, you must answer one of mine: are you the highlander? If not, then yes. Sorry.

Before this thread it never in all my years crossed my mind that syrup even has an expiration date.

DMark, if he weren’t married to my sister I’d suspect my b-i-l was your SO. The good news is that when I visit I get to take home a shopping bag full of just past their date groceries. What baffles me is that he’s the one that buys most of the groceries.

Too much syrup???

NO SUCH THING!!!

6-8-10? Are you kidding? Are you aware that it is only 7-25-10? If you’d said 6-8-00 then I might worry, But not that much.

Mom wanted to throw it out. I told her it would be fine.

I store mine in the fridge because I found white mold on it one time. (This is for real maple syrup, not the fake stuff, which probably never goes bad.) I guess I don’t use it up quickly enough. Except for the mold, I doubt real maple syrup actually goes bad.

Mom also said we can’t get real maple syrup for it is $5 for a little bottle
