Today in nature I saw

As I sat at a stop light in Burien, a bald eagle flew over.

We took the ferry today from Wilmington, NC to Southport, NC. A pelican-rich environment out there!

I was enjoying the rare nice weather outside yesterday evening and met the racoon that lives in my garage

Just got back from my walk. AS I headed down the beach, three bald eagles circled almost directly over me. The two males and a female were fairly low. I paused my walking apps and opened the camera to get some video. One of the eagles took off down the beach. I tried to get the other two, but they were almost above me and the Sun was also a factor. Another eagle joined them as they circled around. I lost sight of them due to the angle and the Sun, then a fourth eagle came. As I tried to find an angle, I noticed five or six other bald eagles circling about half a mile up the beach. I wasn’t able to shoot any video, but it was nice to see live.

On the way back up the beach, I was overflown by a Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion or MH-53 (some sort of ‘53’, anyway). Hey, I was in nature!

That’s a lovely photo @romansperson.

Here, things got relatively warm for the amount of snow we have. 43F when I went to bed at 1 AM. When I got up the slow drop had started and it was raining lightly. Now the rain has turned to snow and the wind has come up. I saw the eagle nest with the male facing into the wind but not moving in his effort to keep the egg warm. It’s going to be cold tonight and there’s no snow on the nest for insulation now. About 10 days until hatching.

It’s fighting time round these parts!

Last night, off and on for a good hour, the foxes were making an enormous racket - screeching so loud that it stopped us watching TV. At one point when they were very close to the house - but on the side that doesn’t have security lights - Mrs T caught a glimpse of what she presumed were two males, up on their back legs and going at it. Looks like there may be a turf war going on, with our yard as the prize.

And today at Wakehurst Place these two guys were brawling on a path, oblivious to the humans walking past them. Mostly head bobbing, but ending with a furious aerial clash.

I haven’t seen a pheasant since I was a kid, when I had a pet retriever that would occasionally flush them. Apparently they’ve been on the decline out here in California for awhile and have a somewhat restricted range. But I still find it odd I never lay eyes on them despite regularly trotting over the same ground I saw them decades ago.

I’d love to see one again someday - I mean sure they’re naturalized rather than native, but they certainly are handsome .

Yes, very pretty birds.

Almost the same. When I was a kid, they’d wander through our backyard in what is now referred to as an inner-ring suburb. Now, I’m further out, near a nature wildlife area and I see zero of them. Humans are a plague.

Yesterday I saw my first frog of the year. And an amazing amount of insects, spring is on the way! And the are snowdrops (Galanthus) flowering like this:

Cockfighting should be illegal.

Saw these driving thru the bank parking lot. There were a few more in the trees. My daughter rolled down the window and gobbled at them and got a gobble back.

Whoa! We have some flocks of roaming turkeys in the neighborhood, but none so big or flashy as that.

It amuses me how similar a male turkey’s courtship display is to that of a peacock.

Just a different color scheme.

today in nature i saw a dead cat next to the metro north tracks

Took the dog for a walk on the beach yesterday around 6:00 p.m. Heard a loud breath. Turned and saw a Gray Whale about 20 yards off shore. We followed him back to our house, but he kept going.
We’ve lived here 20 years. Occasionally we see Orcas, but this is the first Gray Whale.

And the whale came back today!

That’s fantastic!

Friday, we spotted a bald eagle riding the air currents about the highway on a cold, windy day. Usually, there are lots of hawks in that location but nary a one was showing face.

I’m getting excited for the bald eagle egg hatch. It might happen later this week or early next.

Saw some kinda big old Woodpecker on the back fence today. No photos. Lots of wild horses when I took the doggos out.

That’s so cool! (For some reason, the “loud breath” part tickled me.)

If I remember dolphins correctly, they sound like, “Toooo - HUP!” (exhaling then inhaling, the opposite of us, for what I hope are obvious reasons) is that what a huge whale sounds like, too?
