1929: The first annual Academy Awards were presented at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. The ceremony attracted an audience of 250 people. There was no radio or newsreel coverage, due in part to the fact that the winners (selected from the best pictures of August, 1927, to July, 1928) had been announced several months earlier.
