Today's Korean Holiday Marked by Cool Google Doodle

Today (9 October 2015) is 한글날 (‘Hangeul Nal’/Hangeul Proclamation Day) commemorating King Sejong’s promulgation of Korea’s native writing system. The Google Doodle here looks pretty cool.

Wow! I like it! I need to check google more often.

I learned basic Korean at the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey, California. I really liked the writing system, the han-gul, as it is phonetic, one sound, one letter. I have forgotten most of the Korean I learned, from lack of chance to use it. But when I see it spelled out I can still say the words I see.

The hard part was learning to pronounce sounds not really used in English. And when han-gul is used to try and spell English words, it doesn’t always have letters for sounds we English speakers use, but they don’t.
